Job Description:
Summary of Internship: The Bioinformatics Internship position provides an opportunity for biological sciences and engineering students who are currently pursuing a computer science, computer engineering, or similar engineering degree to get hands on experience working with bioinformatics scientists in a fast-paced environment. The bioinformatics intern will contribute to development projects involving the application of next-generation sequencing to current challenges in immuno-oncology research.

Essential Functions:

  • The bioinformatics software intern is responsible for providing software engineering support related to the development of next-generation sequencing based assays for immuno-oncology research applications.
  • Support a variety of software engineering activities and may be assigned to a variety of engineering tasks throughout the department
  • Be involved with many aspects of software quality assurance and some software design and analysis tasks
  • Provide feedback on specifications and designs
  • Learn about software engineering and instrumentation through daily activities.
  • Accept candid feedback and look for areas of improvements
  • Specific tasks will be tailored to the software interns experience level and abilities
  • A software intern works under the close supervision of engineers, project managers, and software engineering managers
Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a cross-functional team
  • Strong willingness to learn, be mentored, and improve
  • Desire to contribute and improve design of new and existing scientific instrumentation products
  • Strong customer focus
  • Desire to teach other molecular biologists and engineers about technology in area of expertise
  • Knowledge of least one software development tool set such as Java, C#; Python and R preferred.
  • Aptitude for writing software programs
Qualifications:
  • Student currently enrolled in classes leading to an undergraduate degree (e.g. Bachelor’s) in a software or computer related engineering discipline, or a biological sciences discipline which includes computer science training.
  • Computer science or computer engineering, or like engineering field
  • Molecular biology, immunology, or greater science knowledge preferred
