Located in Franklin, TN. Under the direction of the Department of Bioinformatics, the Systems Engineer will make significant contributions to the automation of various laboratory processes and data workflows. This position is a hands-on position; he/she will be responsible for understanding, developing and integrating multiple software applications that collectively support complex research and clinical workflows necessary for the development of predictive clinical tests in oncology.

Adhering to GMP, ISO, and Quality Standards, the Systems Engineer will determine and conduct an appropriate level of analysis and design as an integral part of the development process. He/she will design and implement integration solutions and services, periodically provide support for production systems, consult with product owners, identify current operating procedures, and clarify system design goals.

You will be part of a talented team of engineers that demonstrate superb technical competency, delivering mission-critical infrastructure, and ensuring the highest levels of availability, performance, and security. Qualified systems engineers will have a background in IT, computer systems engineering, or systems engineering and analysis.

He/she will be part of a dynamic and fast-paced software team and will have the opportunity to work with experts in a wide range of disciplines including biology, computational sciences, and translational medicine in tight-knit cross-functional teams.

What You Will Be Doing:

  • Works closely with software engineers, lab staff, and computational scientists to identify and automate key workflow processes
  • Designs, develops, integrates, and deploys server-side and system integration software and/or scripts
  • Is hands-on and pro-active in gaining an understanding of lab instrumentation, processes and data workflows
  • Makes recommendations for process improvements that will make a positive impact on the laboratory and analysis workflow
  • Provides application support for testing, debugging and applying incremental improvements in working laboratory environments
  • Develops scripts and processes to maintain and monitor the health of the lab automation processes
  • Monitors data through the life cycle, including migration, archival and deletion
  • Monitors and reports on system performance
  • Working from user stories, task definitions, and technical specifications, implements code modules with appropriate unit tests
  • Evaluates potential solutions, and coordinates technical implementation
  • Manages and monitors all installed systems and infrastructure, including servers, switches (preferably Cisco), and firewalls
  • Installs, configures, tests, and maintains operating systems, application software, and system management tools
  • Manages users, groups, and resources using Active Director and Group Policy
  • Proactively ensures the highest levels of systems and infrastructure availability
  • Monitors and tests application performance for potential bottlenecks, identify possible solutions, and work to implement those fixes
  • Maintains security, backup, and redundancy strategies
  • Identifies departmental needs and makes suggestions regarding technical direction
  • Writes and maintains custom scripts to increase system efficiency and lower the human intervention time on any tasks
  • Participates in the design of information and operational support systems, including documentation of those systems
  • Provides 1st, 2nd, and 3rd level support
  • Liaises with vendors and other IT personnel for problem resolution
What You Need for this Position:
  • Demonstrable hands-on expertise with Microsoft systems including active directory, powershell, job scheduling is required
  • Strong working understanding of virtual private network/s across multiple sites with cloud resources is required
  • Strong understanding of relational database systems, SQL, and software testing methodologies is required
  • Strong working knowledge of Linux is required
  • A wide breadth of understanding of automation technologies is preferred
  • Working experience with Python and relational databases (e.g. Postgres) preferred
  • Experience with services, event viewer logs, share permissions, network analysis tools, and mail protocols (smtp) preferred
  • Experience in the laboratory industry and/or with medical devices and equipment and LIS systems is desirable
  • Knowledge of biological and/or clinical data is desirable
  • Hands-on experience in programming using the API from multiple software systems is desirable
  • Proven working experience in installing, configuring, and troubleshooting Microsoft and UNIX /Linux-based environments
  • Solid Cloud storage and migration experience, preferably in AWS
  • Experience with Microsoft Office 365, SharePoint, and PowerShell
  • Experience with virtualization and containerization (e.g., VMware, Virtual Box)
  • Experience with monitoring systems
  • Solid scripting skills (e.g., shell scripts, Perl, Ruby, Python)
  • Solid networking knowledge (OSI network layers, TCP/IP)
  • Experience working in a process structured environment which includes Change Management and Disaster Recovery Preparedness
  • Experience implementing, supporting, and migrating Windows server operating systems
  • Knowledge of functional and operational practices necessary to operate in a highly available, highly secure, and highly regulated environment to meet business and compliance requirements
