Job Description:
We are seeking a Lead Bioinformatician / Systems Administrator to work at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Silver Spring, MD.

Responsibilities:

• Perform knowledge engineering functions between the IT based staff and the medical research science staff.

• Manage information management programs, projects and systems as required.

• Design, search, and investigate hardware and software capabilities including academic, open source and commercially available systems.

• Develop new and improved concepts, principles, and techniques that will advance the body of knowledge of information management and apply advanced computer science methods and techniques to solve complex computer processing requirements for data analysis, inventory management and clinical system interface.

• Design, develop, test and document software, hardware and interface requirements.

• Analyze problems to develop solutions involving computer hardware and software.

• Enhance existing systems used for genotypic, phenotypic, epidemiological and demographic data.

• Responsible for obtaining, installing and utilizing newly purchased software applications.

• Apply theoretical expertise and innovation to create or apply new technology.

• Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's), templates and forms, (including, but not limited to, statistical programming plan SOP and template).

• Effectively interpret analysis and write reports as requested.

• Supervise requirements analysis, software development, security and information assurance, web enablement, and data entry and data management personnel short of personal services or inherently Governmental functions.

• Consult with users, management, vendors, and technicians to determine computing needs and system requirements.

• Participate in staffing decisions and direct training of subordinates short of inherently Governmental functions.

• Provide all job-related progress reports/technical reports required.

• Maintain a safe workplace ensuring that he/she is aware of and observes appropriate safety and occupational health rules and regulations. Required to attend safety training relative to his/her position and report any infractions of safety procedures to the facility Safety Officer.

• Provide technical assistance and participate on proposal writing projects when applicable.

• Attend relevant seminars, scientific conferences, and meetings to the MRSN

Qualifications:

• Ph.D. or M.S. in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Biology, Microbiology, Virology, Computer Science.

• M.S. applicants must have 2+ years professional experience.

• Must demonstrate interdisciplinary knowledge in both biology and computer science either in coursework, continuing education or previous professional experience.

• Ability to work on the command line, bash scripting.

• Project management experience.

Desired Skills:

• Experience in systems administration and computational architecture, databases, demonstrated programming work on open source projects (ie. Github).

• Programming skills in python or perl.

• Publication record in biological research projects
