Job Description:
This position is responsible for defining, implementing, and maintaining a robust computing architecture to support the evolving scientific requirements and priorities of the Institute. This includes ensuring optimal operation of the Institute’s internal compute grid and storage resources, transition to cloud-based solutions as appropriate, and developing roadmaps for future computing needs in consultation with Institute scientists. This will require knowledge of high performance computing environments, external compute resources, and bioinformatics tools and software. This person will play an active role in technical infrastructure decision-making and implementation processes. This position includes supervisory responsibility for IT staff and coordinating efforts of other JCVI staff as needed.

Qualifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field. Minimum of eight years experience as a computer systems administrator or engineer in a life sciences environment performing duties similar to the above.
Experience migrating applications to the cloud (e.g. AWS, Google…). The ability to evaluate cost vs performance vs security related to outsourcing both administrative and scientific software applications.
Demonstrated expert knowledge in UNIX/Linux Systems Administration is required. Experience in Enterprise-wide OS and software deployment procedures is required. Experience in High Performance Compute clusters and related computing software and technologies are required.
Experience in clustered file systems is required. Experience working in a research environment, and implementing scientific software applications. Experience with bioinformatics software applications is desirable.
Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise staff.
