Job Description:
The Centre for Computational Biology (CCB) promotes excellence in Data Science for Life Sciences.

Drawing together Bioinformatics, Biology, Statistics, Computer Science and Mathematics, the inter-disciplinary nature of the CCB offers a natural link between Big Data generation, analytical skill and knowledge in specific application fields.

The post holders will substantially contribute to the development and leadership of major teaching programmes (or equivalent), and the delivery of teaching and assessment, whilst enhancing the student experience and employability. The role will typically also involve developing and advising others, including: providing expert advice to staff and students, supervising and examining PhD students, and developing and advising others on learning and teaching tasks and methods.

The post-holders will be expected to pursue personal research, including developing novel ideas and winning support, including financial support in line with the CCB and University’s strategy. The successful candidates will actively develop with an established national and growing international reputation; achieved through significant original research work and your clear record of impact, and/or experience with designing and developing significant innovative underpinning technologies.

The post holders will contribute to management and administration, at Centre and Institute level as well as making an important contribution to some managerial/leadership activities (e.g. working groups) within the University. This may include developing and making substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement, widening participation, schools outreach, or similar activities at Centre/Institute level, or further within the University.

The University was recently invited to become a member of the Alan Turing Institute (ATI), a prestigious British institute set up to advance the world-changing potential of data science. The University is working with the ATI and other partner universities, industry, government and third sector organisations to play a critical role in driving data science and AI research in the UK. The ATI’s mission is to make great leaps in data science and artificial intelligence research in order to change the world for the better. Research excellence is the foundation of the Institute: the sharpest minds from the data science community investigating the hardest questions, working with integrity and dedication. Its researchers collaborate across disciplines to generate impact, both through theoretical development and application to real-world problems, fuelled by the desire to innovate and add value.
