Job Description:
Reporting to the Senior Director of Software Engineering, the LIMS Developer will work to plan, design, write and implement software and provide expertise and technical/analytic support for NYGC’s CLARITY Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). The successful applicant will work closely with a multidisciplinary group of colleagues, including laboratory personnel with backgrounds in molecular biology and laboratory automation, as well as laboratory informatics. This role is essential to our sequencing operations and supports the maintenance and improvement of the LIMS system through the development and maintenance of software that addresses new and existing LIMS workflows, reporting and integration.

The LIMS Developer must demonstrate the ability to translate client needs and requirements, as well as develop and test tangible software solutions with the end users. The incumbent’s efforts will focus heavily on providing production support and break/fix resolution, the implementation of functional enhancements requested by clients and corresponding software releases (and associated processes), providing end-user support, as well as supporting, maintaining and managing both production and non-production environments.

Job duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Write and maintain custom code to extend the LIMS’ capabilities;
  • Maintain LIMS/Laboratory protocol configurations, and implement future protocol configurations;
  • Support integration with other software;
  • Implement instrument integrations and interactions with LIMS;
  • Work with the team members to establish a versioning system for LIMS configurations;
  • Troubleshoot system and application errors based on Standard Operating Procedures;
  • Document issues, impact and root cause and recommend remediation paths;
  • Work to rectify use and/or instrument errors, identifying possible downstream effects;
  • Engineer long-term solutions for recurring issues through root cause analysis and data analytics;
  • Work with members of the various customer groups (lab staff, project management, etc.) in an iterative fashion to collect requirements for new and enhanced functionality, demonstrate changes and integrate feedback;
  • Conduct User Acceptance Testing to ensure configuration is meeting business needs, and resolve any identified bugs;
  • Manage SQL databases and servers;
  • Manage environments and releases;
  • Maintain and, when necessary, create system documentation, including developing and/or updating training materials and delivering training to end-users;
  • Ensure that the LIMS complies with all relevant regulatory standards.
Required Skills:
  • BS in Computer Science, computer engineering, or related field plus 3 years related experience; master’s degree plus 2 years related experience;
  • Experience working with any high-throughput production LIMS strongly preferred, with CLARITY a plus;
  • Basic programming skills required; experience with Python preferred;
  • Familiarity with XML/XPath and REST APIs is a plus;
  • Experience with source control systems (Git, SVN, VCS, etc);
  • SQL proficiency required, with PostgreSQL knowledge preferred;
  • Familiarity with molecular biology lab workflows and best practices, with next-generation sequencing laboratory experience preferred;
  • Ability to work as the sole support engineer and as a member of a team to deliver quality code under tight deadlines;
  • Ability to document and report troubleshooting procedures and resolutions;
  • Excellent communication skills and a proven ability to work directly with customers in a patient, courteous and diplomatic fashion to understand their needs and translate those into actionable software requirements;
  • Detail orientated with strong organizational skills.
