Details:

GlaxoSmithKline is a world leading research-based pharmaceutical company that combines both individual talent and technical resources to create a platform for the delivery of strong growth in a rapidly changing healthcare market. Our mission is to improve the quality of human life by enabling people to do more, feel better and live longer.
An exciting opportunity is available at our main US-based R&D site (Upper Providence, PA) to lead a small team of scientists with a strong focus on genetics, genomics, transcriptomics, molecular and cellular biology, to help drive drug discovery research programs from conception to the clinic. Target Sciences is leveraging human genetic data and state-of-the-art molecular biology techniques in order to discover and validate novel therapeutic targets and pathways. The aim is to build strong evidence linking targets to disease during early stage drug discovery, in order to improve the probability of success of late stage clinical trials. We are looking for someone with broad experience in functional genomics, with specific expertise in cDNA cloning, expression construct engineering, gene knockdown (siRNA/shRNA), over-expression and genome editing (CRISPR/Cas9) in mammalian cells. Additional experience in related genomic technologies (next generation sequencing/NGS, transcriptomics) would be an advantage.
We are seeking an innovative and dynamic scientist to work in the Department of Target and Pathway Validation (TPV) within Target Sciences, in a multidisciplinary, collaborative environment interacting with other molecular and cellular biologists, computational biologists, geneticists, statisticians, and therapeutic area experts (e.g. Oncology, Metabolic Disease, Infectious Disease, Respiratory Disease) across R&D, as well as with external collaborators and key strategic alliance partners. The successful candidate will report directly to the current head of TPV-Experimental Genomics. Excellent communication, organization and presentation skills are required, as well as a demonstrated ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
Lead a small team of scientists exploring the functions of human genes and gene variants (SNPs) in multiple disease areas, by designing, engineering and utilizing custom recombinant reagents for target and pathway validation studies (gene knockdown, over-expression, genome editing) in relevant cellular models
Drive innovation to expand genomic research capabilities; investigate the complex relationship between genotype and phenotype in collaboration with internal experts in NGS and transcriptomics technology, utilizing a range of advanced techniques (RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, 3C-seq) to study gene transcription, translation, epigenetic regulation and the effect of chromatin structure/genomic interactions on gene expression
Work with other GSK scientists including disease experts to design experiments, analyze and interpret data, with the aim of identifying and validating new drug targets, and where appropriate, supporting subsequent target and molecule progression (e.g. compound mechanism of action, biomarker discovery and validation)
Collaborate with the external scientific community and with GSK strategic alliance partners (e.g. The Altius Institute for Biomedical Sciences, Seattle, WA; Open Targets, Cambridge, UK)
Help identify and champion new drug targets, lead research projects, manage resources, and deliver high quality scientific data with decision-making impact on program objectives and milestones
