Job Description:
POSITION SUMMARY This person will lead an experienced multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers to extend the limits of existing technology and develop new technologies for future commercialization within Luminex’s product portfolio. The group manager is also expected to have strong core technical competencies and provide scientific leadership and contribution. Involvement in cross-functional initiatives is a key element of the job achievable through close collaborations across the Luminex organization and external partners. This role is also responsible for actively fostering innovative solutions and valuable IP generation ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES Key Responsibilities of the Job: • Responsibilities include identifying new methods or technologies that will enhance Luminex’s collection of intellectual property by understanding the product features our customers feel are most important. • Identify enhancements to our existing products or formulate ideas for new products that fulfill these needs. • Investigate high-risk technologies that could be considered “disruptive”, and the basis for future products. • Maintain awareness of current advances in technology pertaining to the diagnostics industry • Find and hire talented scientific personnel. • Project a positive attitude and act as role model to group members. • Place group members in roles where their talents match their responsibilities. • Assure group members have a clear understanding of what is expected from them. • Provide positive feedback to group members frequently when warranted by their actions. • The manager will strive to make continuous quality improvements and meet or exceed objectives. • Assist with hiring and training of new scientific personnel as required JOB REQUIREMENTS Competencies: • Learning on the Fly—learns quickly/open to change • Organizational Agility—knows how to go through the proper channels to get things done • Peer Relationship – cooperative, team player, trusted and supported by peers • Planning—sets specific goals and objectives, ability to plan for the length and difficulty of assignments • Priority Setting—focuses on what is most important . • Leadership – effectively balances scientific and corporate leadership skills Required Education/Training: • Graduate science or engineering degree (PhD preferred) and at least 4 years of experience in a related field Required Certifications/License/Special Skills: • Fundamental knowledge of scientific fields including chemistry, molecular biology, biophysics, fluidics, thermodynamics, solid-state physics, and electrochemistry • In-depth understanding of molecular biology techniques and principles • Excellent team management and individual management skills • Ability to interact effectively with Senior Management • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written • Exceptional bench skills and proven technical knowledge of nucleic acids and associated procedures • Experience developing instrumentation used for biological testing. • Experience in the use of statistical methods in the interpretation of clinical/biological data. • Entrepreneurial determination and ability to drive ideas through initial barriers. • Ability to influence the way others look at problems. • Demonstrated ability bringing highly complex systems from concept to market is a plus. • Demonstrated ability to root cause failures in complex systems. • Ability to lead teams effectively and to manage individuals • Ability to develop and maintain a positive, energetic and collaborative research culture • Ability to communicate effectively with senior management and manage expectations & timelines Required Work Experience: • PhD in chemistry, biochemistry, physics, biophysics, molecular biology or related discipline with a minimum of 4 years of experience in the biotech or medical device industry. • M.Sc. in chemistry, biochemistry, physics, biophysics, molecular biology or related discipline with a minimum of 7 years of experience in the biotech or medical device industry • Experience working independently in a fast-paced environment with rapidly changing priorities. WORKING CONDITIONS • Must work onsite at Luminex office at least 90% of the time • Travel may be required approximately: 10% of the time • International travel may be required approximately 10% of the time • Possible exposure to biological or chemical hazard, extensive noise, and/or working with lasers • Work situations include dealing with people; working alone; making judgments and decisions; and directing, controlling or planning the activity of others Physical Requirements: • Lifting/Use of Strength is Light (up to 20 pounds) • Climbing on the job is required: Occasionally--Up to 33% of the time • Kneeling on the job is required: Occasionally--Up to 33% of the time • Reaching on the job is required: Occasionally--Up to 33% of the time • Stooping on the job is required: Occasionally--Up to 33% of the time • Vision (Color) on the job is required: Occasionally--Up to 33% of the time
