Position Summary:
• As a Research Manager you will be joining the market leader in Mass Spectrometry and will work on one of the most vibrant and rapidly evolving fields in computational biology that seeks to integrate data streams and biological knowledge from several areas of omics research.
• Candidate is expected to have an expert level understanding of the latest technology innovations in Mass Spectrometry and Chromatography and related customer use cases and perspectives. A Research Manager must have experience using a mass spectrometer to solve problems.
• The Research Manager will supervise a team of talented software research scientists and algorithm developers, providing guidance and direction for research projects within the organization.
• This person must be able to identify and evaluate new technologies and solutions from internal and external sources that can meet our technical challenges.
• This is a hand on Research Manager role. The Research Manager is responsible for conducting and leading algorithm based research as part of the internal solution for major technological solutions. This includes designing, developing, optimizing, and validating robust algorithms for the analysis of mass spectrometry data. This person will create prototypes for demonstrating the application and data driven verification of these algorithms. The candidate will drive projects to completion while ensuring acceptance by stakeholders.
• A person in this role will communicate results to all levels of organization including peers, senior management and internal customers and stakeholders.
• Consults with internal and external stakeholders and interested colleagues to characterize and improve the performance of scientific workflow instances.
• Prepares/authors technical reports, documentation, and research papers in scientific journals; presents results at technical conferences.
• Leads the team in development of intellectual property documentation such as invention disclosures and patent applications. This person will also help to drive intellectual freedom to operate investigation and documentation on all new software technology in the department.
Key Responsibilities:
• The supervision of research scientists and algorithm developers.
• Lead research and development initiatives for the Software Research team.
• Mentor research scientists and algorithm developers on research methodologies, technical approach, project execution, and domain skills.
• Provide scientific expertise particularly in the areas of omics (Proteomics, Metabolomics), chemistry and mass spectrometry as needed by the project.
• Hands on Algorithm Development for Thermo Fisher Scientific’s software products. Develop algorithms solving customer’s problems, targeted for next generation applications.
• Effectively apply good project methodology and standards as well as adhere to operating procedures and instructions.
Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:
Basic Qualifications:
• Masters, Ph.D. or equivalent experience (Formal training in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, or Computer Science) and 8+ years of experience in bioinformatics/algorithm development.
• 8+ years of experience in an applicable omics domain with a very strong understanding of omics – Proteomics, Metabolomics.
• 8+ years of experience in Matlab, R or a scripting language (Perl , Python etc)
• Position Requires 3-5+ years of people management experience, specifically supervising and mentoring other research scientists and algorithm developers within a Mass Spectrometry enviornment.
• Understands established mathematical principles and algorithms associated with processing spectroscopic data.
• Strong background in several areas of omics research and has experience in developing algorithms for omics applications.
• Experience in developing algorithms for signal processing, statistics, machine learning, data analysis and pattern recognition.
• The candidate should have a track record of achievement and delivering on significant responsibilities and projects in a timely fashion.
• Comfortable with and effective at expressing and exchanging ideas, concepts and designs in a group setting.
• Comfortable working within an international team.
• Flexible during times of change.
• Comfortable with working in a dynamic, flexible environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Additional formal training in Computer Science and Mathematics are a plus.
• Experience with Thermo HPLCs and Mass spectrometers.
• Familiarity with Test Driven Development and Agile software methodology.
• Experience developing commercial software products.
• Experience working within a distributed, international team
• Experience with Data Mining and Neural Networks.
• C# and C++ is preferred
Non-Negotiable Hiring Criteria:
• A college degree, preferably related to biology, biochemistry, chemistry, or physics.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• 12+ years of relevant work experience
