A PhD level position is open in the cheminformatics group within Global Structural Chemistry. We are looking for individuals with exceptional problem solving skills, substantial record of scientific research accomplishments and big-picture perspective on the drug discovery process.
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- 3D macromolecules structure data integration from multiple experiments (X-ray, NMR, cryo-EM, homology models)
- Scientific and technical oversight with regard to the internal Merck PDB curation
- Enable the structure solution and deposition workflows
- Liaise with software vendors and IT to create an environment where hypotheses can be generated and tested using cheminformatics and computational chemistry tools: (1) protein sequence comparison, including sequence alignment/search, sequence-based protein family classification, domain parsing, phylogenetic classification and phylochemical classification; (2) sequence annotation, including annotation/prediction of hydrophobic profiles, transmembrane regions, active sites, signaling sites, and secondary structures; (3) protein structure analysis, including visualization, geometry analysis, structure comparison/classification, dynamics, and electrostatics, mapping binding site information to protein sequence ; (4) three-dimensional structure prediction, including homology modeling, fold recognition using threading, ab initio prediction, and docking; (5) calculation of ligand-based properties (1D, 2D and 3D) and SAR building based on structure information, medicinal chemistry data, and enzyme evolution data
- In process chemistry the connect structure motifs to functional characteristics such as chemical activity in biocatalysis
- Design new protein sequences of novel biological functions (e.g. enzyme activity, ligand binding, and protein-protein interactions
Qualifications
Education:
- A Ph.D. in cheminformatics, computational chemistry, bioinformatics, biophysics, computer science, mathematics or structural biology (X-ray crystallography, NMR).
Required:
- A minimum of 4 years of postdoc experience in structure-based software, including packages for docking, molecular simulations and homology modeling (Open Eye, Schrodinger, CCG).
- Experience in scientific programming (Unix shells, Python, Perl).
- Experience with protein structure databases (Proasis)
- Strong communication skills, along with the ability to work well in multidisciplinary teams, are essential.
Preferred:
- Statistical software packages (R), machine learning and QSAR methods
