As Software Manager in the larger Illumina Array portfolio organization, you and your team will be responsible for identifying and implementing technical solutions to extend Illumina’s Array Design and Analysis SW based on strategic goals for the healthy screening (human and Ag.) and direct to consumer markets. This role will include but is not limited to:
- Working with the commercial team and customers to define market needs and translate these into a 3-5 yr SW roadmap
- Driving Software design and implementation, while guiding execution through the entire Software Development Life Cycle
- Successfully leading high functioning project and SW Development / Bioinformatics functional teams to develop high throughput analysis solutions for Illumina’s Array assays including but not limited to Genotyping. Methylation and Copy Number.
- Defining and developing technical relationships with contract SW developers, assay scientists, bioinformaticians, quality assurance and customers to ensure our products are successful in the market.
- Be the subject matter expert for troubleshooting, implementing containment and root cause corrective actions in response to customer and or manufacturing complaints and CAPAs.
- Provides input and guidance to Array management team strategic plan on how 5-7yr Content design and Array Analysis SW roadmap could influence the success of meeting market needs for healthy screening (human and Ag.) and direct to consumer markets
- Defines and leads execution on 1-3 yr. technical deliverables for Content design and Array Analysis SW based on milestones derived from the roadmap
- Collaborate with product owners and the development team to design and maintain high quality cloud and device based applications against established processes in a scrum team setting
- Works cross functionally as the mentor to, or direct CT member to ensure SW requiring deliverables are met on time and in budget
- Leads technical scope definition and execution of on market product enhancements for Illumina’s Array Analysis and Design SW solutions ensuring all ECI / CAPA are closed within <60 days and customer feedback and technology improvements are rolled into annual product enhancement releases.
- Promote and drive innovation in technologies, processes and tools for cutting-edge software development
- Provide SW development and bioinformatics team and contract SW developers with technical subject matter expertise and work with fellow members of the team (Assay and consumable developers, LIMS/Automation SW, Marketing, Business development, and Array portfolio management) to ensure development activities are aligned with scope, schedule, priorities and business objectives.
- Leads an Agile scrum team to plan, design, implement and test software to cater to Illumina’s Arrays market
- Responsible for establishing best practices in SW lifecycle management, integration of assay applications and govern detailed designs generated by the team and contractors / partners Hire, mentor and motivate SW development and bioinformatics team members and contractors/partners to provide outstanding support and continuously improves the processes for the full SDLC
- Evaluate and review design frameworks and methodologies and approves design to achieve functional and non-functional requirements and conformance to the architecture
- Works with Array platform leadership / program manager to establish project team / contractor’s workload and supervises their work to consistently deliver against established schedules.
- Understands priorities and manages work queues against the schedule. Reacts quickly and appropriately to changes in business priorities.
- Represents and advocates for the the Arrays Software team in larger cross-organizational SW and platforms forums
- Supervises full development lifecycle, including the final production acceptance review and signoff. Ensure that SW and Bioinformatics team’s design and development is in compliance with architectural, development and functional process standards. Review functional specifications, create detailed design and technical specifications, oversee code and test activities. Monitors and reports on progress in completing projects and accomplishing goals.
- Proactively addresses potential system issues to meet or exceed established timelines and delivers service within budget constraints and seeks ways to reduce application related costs.
- 10+ years of industrial experience in software development field, ideally with experience in the field of data analysis and content design SW preferentially in the life sciences, biotech, Pharmaceutical or Medical device fields
- 4+ years managing high functioning software development team
- Strong knowledge of agile scrum methodologies and experience in using those methods to deliver complex software components
- Very strong software project management skills with experience in design, integration and deployment of analysis and design SW
- Experience in Requirements analysis and leading teams in use of Jira and/or other Requirements management applications
- Experience with designing highly scalable and secure enterprise applications dealing with very high volume of data and targeting multiple Operating Systems
- Experience with cloud technologies and service oriented architecture
- Experience with C# and the .NET Framework, using database technologies like PostgreSQL strongly desired
- Proven track record of developing user interfaces to enable facile and robust integration of workflows into production scale operations
- Experience in integrating analysis solutions with LIMS / MES systems
- Experience with data analytics and modeling for analytics to ensure end users to optimize their workflow efficiency based on lab set up
- Experience with iterative development life cycle methodologies and application of those principles, especially Agile development practices
- Track record of designing and executing market leading technical solutions from user needs / voice of customer analysis to design and development to testing and implementation.
- Demonstrated ability managing projects with tight timelines in a matrixed organization
- Strong ability to analyze business requirements and transform into technical design and system solutions
- Strong track record of implementing market leading SW through collaboration with supplier partners and contractors
- Able to effectively communicate status, design and approach with management/business sponsors/product managers
- Familiar with standard software development tools, including source version control, defect tracking, documentation, and testing systems.
- Self-directed, works with limited management direction and exercise considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignment.
- Ability to build and leverage strong relationships, effectively mentor and develop contractors and project reports and drive cross functional alignment on difficult topics with overall business objectives in mind
- Exceptional problem solving and troubleshooting skills
- Excellent communication skills
- Proven ability to mentor and coach engineers in day-to-day scenarios as well as develop their skills over the long term
- Experience with participating in and driving cross-organizational or inter-company collaboration
- Must thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with challenging schedules
