Position Summary

Valera, a Moderna venture, is seeking an exceptionally talented and highly motivated bioinformatician with a broad skill base to work as part of a highly collaborative, multi-disciplinary, and fast-paced team. Valera’s mission is to develop mRNA vaccines and therapeutics for infectious diseases. The successful applicant will deploy his/her extensive expertise in protein modelling to develop novel antigens or therapeutics proteins that can be successfully encoded via Moderna’s technology

  Responsibilities

Using bioinformatics tools, structural data and/or relevant homology models, design and/or optimize antigens to elicit the desired immunological responses for novel vaccines, working closely with protein engineering and immunology colleagues
Using bioinformatics tools, structural data and/or relevant homology models, design and/or optimize novel protein therapeutics/antibodies to elicit the desired PK/PD, once expressed via Moderna’s mRNA technology
Mine relevant publicly available and commercial data resources
Develop and apply new bioinformatics methods and data processing pipelines to further enhance the ability to design antigens/proteins
Biostatistics, including design of experiments and advanced data modeling techniques
Serve as a technical expert in bioinformatics within the organization and provide support to multiple projects and programs
Identify, manage and contribute to external collaborations relevant to bioinformatics
Communicate findings internally and externally

  Minimum Qualifications
Ph.D. with 3+ years of experience or M.S. with 6+ years of experience in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Biostatistics, Computer Science, or related field
Technical proficiency required in:
-At least one programming or scripting language (multiple preferred), e.g. Python, Perl, R
-State of the art bioinformatics tools, algorithms, and methods
-Commonly used commercial and open source software packages
-High performance computing in a distributed/cloud environment, e.g. AWS
-Software development best practices, including agile, version control, and unit testing
Proven ability to draw robust conclusions from complex datasets, and present them in a clear and understandable way
An established record of innovative research achievements in bioinformatics reported in top-tier journals and patent applications
Strong written and oral communication skills, comfort with senior management interactions
Positive team building and teamwork skills:  innate ability to influence, lead and inspire people, within function and beyond functional/company boundaries

  Preferred Qualifications

Experience of antigen design and optimization for the development of vaccines
Experience of protein/antibody engineering
Strong foundation in molecular biology, with an emphasis on mRNA (preferred)
The ideal candidate will have deep scientific and technical expertise in the following:
-Sequence searching, alignment, and analysis
-Motif discovery, sequence mining
-Biological databases of sequence and functional data, e.g. EMBL, GenBank, Entrez, UniProt, RefSeq, miRBase, ENCODE, Roadmap, etc.
-Next generation sequencing data
-Biostatistics, including design of experiments
