For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.
We have multiple openings for National Security Scientists to work on sensitive, politically significant national security topics within the Chemical and Biological Threat Awareness Program (CBTAP). As an integral member of an interdisciplinary team, you will develop collaborations with other scientists and researchers, analyze dual use biotechnologies, basic research, and world events and integrate information from all sources in order to present formal analyses to government and other stakeholders. You will also contribute to the generation of new research topics and aid in program development.
Essential Duties
- Conduct advanced independent research on sensitive, politically significant national security topics, concentrating on, but not limited to, biological sciences.
- Analyze emerging scientific trends and current events; prioritize, analyze, validate, and communicate complex data related to relevant topics.
- Guide and contribute to the development of a focused research program in designated areas that address key science and technology and policy questions.
- Contribute to and actively participate in the development of integrated research programs to meet sponsor needs in multiple national security focus areas.
- Prepare complex written analyses, verbal briefings, and other products that bring together and communicate advanced research results.
- Desire to be the expert in a new area of study and the perseverance to understand the big picture while focusing on the details.
- Represent complex research analyses to sponsors and other consumers, traveling (typically to the Washington DC metropolitan area) as necessary.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- PhD in a biological, biochemical, or immunology science or related discipline, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Several years of postdoctoral research experience in molecular genetics and/or immunology.
- Demonstrated advanced knowledge and significant research experience in chemical biology, classical biochemistry, molecular genetics, genomics, immunology, or mathematics with a biological focus (e.g., bioinformatics, population genetics, biophysics).
- Documented publication record in peer-reviewed journals with advanced literary skills writing for a large, diverse audience, and be able to distill nuance without losing accuracy and communicate clearly and concisely.
- Demonstrated ability to understand the complex technical aspects and policy components of Chemical & Biological Threat Awareness issues.
- Demonstrated advanced interpersonal skills to interact effectively with colleagues, government sponsors, and other stakeholders; highly customer-focused.
- Confidence to apply one’s transferrable skills and knowledge to synthesize highly specialized information and assimilate it to gain practical results quickly utilizing logical thinking and quantitative methods to solve problems.
- Demonstrated effectiveness when experiencing major changes in work responsibilities, shifting priorities or deadlines and adapting quickly to change and easily consider new approaches, when needed.
Desired Qualifications
- Deep understanding of intelligence community analytic tradecraft and experience with issues related to biological weapons proliferation.
- Familiarity with proliferation-related issues and technologies.
- Computer programming ability (e.g., Python) and/or advanced quantitative skills; for example, this may include advanced mathematics, algorithm development, or statistical analysis.
Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
Anticipated Clearance Level: Q and ability to obtain and maintain SCI access. Your current active Q clearance does not guarantee SCI access approval. SCI access denials may subject employees to reinvestigation of one’s existing Q clearance. (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
