Job Description:
Are you a bio-curator with a knack for capturing and expressing the value of biological experiments? Looking for a great team working on fantastic software used by 1000’s of scientists worldwide?

The Open Microscopy Environment (OME) is seeking a Bio-Curator for the submission pipeline of the Image Data Resource (IDR). The IDR is a collection of more than a million bio-imaging experiments that have been enriched with common bio-molecular annotations to enable discovery and further analysis. The production IDR is at https://idr.openmicroscopy.org and a paper on IDR is at https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5536224/.

We work hard, have a great time, and deliver unique, world-leading applications that are changing the way bioscience works. Everything we do is open-source; our tools are playing a vital role in supporting the move towards open-data and open-science. We aim to change the way the scientific world publishes data--and we need your help!

We value collaboration, and thrive on creativity and well-designed code. We passionately follow open source development and licensing and use a Kanban-style work pattern to deliver the goods. For more information, see https://openmicroscopy.org.

Technical skills are important, but a willingness to take the initiative to research and suggest new tools is critical- we’ll give you the time and support to learn and extend your skills.

Interested? Send us the goods: Your GitHub profile, resources you’ve worked on, teams you have been a part of.

Responsibilities:

  • Bio-curation and/or management of metadata for experiment submissions
  • Communication with submitters and careful tracking of the state of submissions
  • Documentation and testing of analysis and reporting pipelines
  • Development and extension of standard formats for bio-imaging experiments and analysis
  • Design and delivery of training materials (e.g. at hands-on training courses), with occasional collection of participant feedback to guide user-focused development
Requirements:
  • Applicants should have a first degree and/or higher degree (MSc or PhD) in Biology or Bioinformatics and a relevant higher degree such as in MSc in Biology or Bioinformatics. Work experience preferred.
  • Experience working with research scientists analysing or managing research data, or working in a production environment managing scientific data.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills to work successfully within a busy team and will interact with the collaborators, users, support teams and the development team.
Pluses:
  • No programming experience required, but some experience in any of Unix shell, SQL and Python and relational databases (PostgreSQL) would be advantageous.
  • Experience in working with high throughput data, especially array-based gene expression, genotyping or high-throughput sequencing data would be useful.
  • Any experience with the use and design of controlled vocabularies.
  • Experience of working with RNA-seq data is particularly welcome.
This is a full-time position, in the UK (Dundee, Scotland). Remote working is possible for the right individual, especially for those based in the UK. Appointment is to commence after June 1, 2018 Full-Time for up to three years, with an option of extension depending on funding.
