Job Description:

For the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences we are looking for an ambitous PhD student with a broad interest in interdisciplinary research working in the exciting field of Systems Biology. Systems Biology is a novel discipline that combines methods from biophysics, computer science and control engineering with genetics, biochemistry, and pre-clinical and clinical research. The project is part of the Group of Biomedical Sciences recent initiatives of establishing Systems Biology across several departments and several academic levels. The Principal Investigator was the first to be entrusted to start within this remit and the PhD student will be part of this growing field.

Systems Biology of Drug-induced Cardiotoxicity and Cardiac pathologies

The Department of Cardiovascular Sciences at the Group of Biomedical Sciences / KU Leuven is committed to advance research and education in cardiovascular sciences and to translate this into improved human health and medicine. To achieve this goal, the department works in a multi-level integrated environment. Vertical integration of research topics is achieved by linking competences from basic science, and pre-clinical modelling to applied clinical and epidemiological research. Horizontal integration is achieved by linking sub-disciplines including research in vascular biology, thrombosis and haemostasis, cardiac structure and function, cellular heterogeneity and interactions, population science, and diagnostic and therapeutic innovation. By this vertical and horizontal integration, the department aims to develop a systems approach of the complexity of cardiovascular disorders. As several key researchers are linked to and employed at the University Hospital Leuven on the same campus, research expertise is easily transferred to the clinics and vice versa. The department's extensive international collaborations and participation in large European and worldwide networks and randomised clinical trials provides a further key strength.

Project

The Department of Cardiovascular Sciences at the Group of Biomedical Sciences / KU Leuven (Belgium) is looking for an enthusiastic and self-driven PhD candidate who will be part of a newly established systems biology lab. Together with a broad spectrum of biomedical, clinical and biochemistry researchers, our lab develops systems biology methods for analyzing cardiac toxicity of chemotherapy and for identifying patterns in the development of cardiac pathologies.

Depending on the skills and interest of the student, the project will focus on a) Experimental (cell culture, Western Blotting, PCR, gene delivery, preclinical analysis) and computational strategies (Ordinary Differential Equation based pathway analysis) for cardiotoxicity and cardio-protection induced by chemotherapeutic agents; b) analysis of gene and micro-RNA expression patters as predictive markers for cardiac diseases.

The highly interdisciplinary project is suited for a (bio-)physicist, biochemists and biotechnologists with experience in molecular biochemistry (cell culturing, Western Blot, gene expression and delivery) and/or a high level of bioinformatics and programming experience (e.g. MATLAB, Python or Perl).

Profile
A broad level of mathematical and statistical expertise is essential. Additionally, a high proficiency in a higher programming language such as MATLAB or C is required, while additional skills in script based languages such as Python or Perl are an advantage. A high level of self-reliance, enthusiasm, stamina, flexibility and frustration tolerance is equally essential as the willingness to obtain biomedical and clinical expertise. Prior expertise in biomedical research is an advantage.

Offer
An exciting and challenging PhD project in the heart of cardiovascular translational research in the vibrant city of Leuven, Belgium
