Job Description:
We are looking for a Physicist or Engineer that will design and build the lab’s microscopes.

What we provide:

  • The resources to conceive disruptive technology and obtain ground-breaking results to advance knowledge of cell biology.
  • Collaborative environment with access to talent and resources of the Biohub platforms (Bioengineering, Genome Editing, Data Sciences, and Advanced Imaging).
  • Access to collaborators, resources and facilities at Stanford, Berkeley and UCSF.
  • Competitive compensation and benefits commensurate with experience.
  • On site free snacks and beverages 🙂
Responsibilities:
  • Design and optimize mechano-optical systems
  • Build, align and operate light-sheet based custom microscopes
  • Collaborate with Lab’s software engineer on the Java based instrument control software
  • Collaborate with the Biohub’s Advanced Imaging Platform on novel imaging modalities
  • Collaborate with the Biohub’s Bioengineering team in the design and building of automation hardware
  • Collaborate with the Biohub’s DataScience on backend storage and processing
REQUIREMENTS:

The candidate should be willing to learn new skills and knowledge, think creatively and show enthusiasm while engaging in risky but potentially rewarding projects. Experience in software engineering (Java) and live fluorescence light-sheet microscopy is highly desired, but not mandatory.

Mandatory:

  • PhD or MS in engineering, physics, biophysics, bioengineering, or a related discipline. Candidates with MS are expected to have at least 4 years of research experience.
  • Hands-on experience building opto-mechanical instruments ideally Light Sheet microscopes
  • Modeling and optimizing mechanical and optical systems (e.g. with SolidWorks and Zeemax) Instrumentation, automation and/or robotics.
  • Python scripting to analyse 2D and 3D image data and run custom optical simulations (Fourier optics).
Desired:
  • Optical modeling and design
  • Adaptive Optics and Imaging (AO, SLM, autofocus, ...)
  • Robotics
  • Microfluidics
  • Java / C++ / LabView
  • Multi-color imaging
  • Sample preparation and mounting

Vison:

The Discovery Machine Lab led by Loic Royer at the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub will design and build lightsheet microscopy based ‘discovery machines’ that will not only acquire image data, but also perform online processing, instant 3D visualization, adaptive imaging, and automated photo-manipulation. These integrated instruments bring together state of the art optics, robotics, machine learning, and image analysis with the aim of building comprehensive atlases of development and modeling complex cellular choreographies.
