Job Description:
The Population Informaticist will work with a group of scientists from the Mount Sinai Genetic Testing Laboratory on innovative analyses of human genomic variation in an integrated environment dedicated to state-of-the-art genetic testing services.

We are seeking an experienced developer/analyst to join a variety of projects and work closely with the Directors and Managers of different departments within the clinical laboratory to assist in quality assurance and analysis to consistently improve upon client service levels and avoid any barriers to meeting and exceeding our crucial turnaround times. The winning candidate will have exposure to cutting-edge technologies and high visibility in a competitive environment. The role offers the chance to design and develop tools, analytical pipelines and data management software in a production environment and the opportunity to make tangible contributions to the ongoing development and implementation of QC/QA and validation strategies.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Analyze genetic ancestry of patients using population genetics modeling to improve our understanding of disease risk.
  • Analyze high-throughput DNA sequence data and integrate with a team of scientists and bioinformaticians to analyze genomic data.
  • Manage databases, conduct statistical and genomic analysis and participate in the preparation of manuscripts and presentations.
  • Build workflows with scientific tools for analysis of high-density genotype data, including vcftools, plink, and LAMP-LD.
  • Work in a team to design, develop and improve software; manage data and implement analytical pipelines.
Qualifications and Skills:
  • Education: M.S. or Ph.D. in a Bioinformatics or Genetics related field (an emphasis on population genetics is a strong plus).
  • Excellent working knowledge of population genetics and/or experience with inference of genetic ancestry.
  • Experience working with one or more of the following programming languages: R, Python, Perl, Matlab, Java, C, C++.
  • Database programming experience (e.g. MySQL) is a strong plus.
