Job Description:
The Simons Center for Quantitative Biology at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is seeking highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellows in information extraction from the bio-medical literature to join Ivan Iossifov’s group.
We are looking to develop a new flexible system for extracting heterogeneous knowledge from medical articles. Rather than solely tagging a specific article for named entities and relations expressed in the article, the goal is to leverage existing techniques for these tasks over a large corpus of bio-medical articles in order to extract rich knowledge about diverse relations such as those between a gene and a disease, relations between brain regions, disease-disease and protein to protein interactions. This would require combination of evidence about a particular relation from different sources, the confidence of prediction in multiple instances in the corpus and possibly the quality of the articles in which the relation is discovered.
The target application domain is the literature on autism, which will require the integration of information from disparate disciplines like medicine, biology, neuroscience and genetics. The final outcomes of the project will be evaluated both by the correctness of extracted information and by its utility for autism researchers.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must hold, or soon expect to hold, a PhD. Strong candidates with a background in information extraction, machine learning, data mining and natural language processing will be considered.
