Job Description:
Responsibilities

The responsibilities of this position include large scale data analysis. Date will include but not be limited to data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (Medical Claims Data) and data from the Healthcare Cost & Utilization Project from the Agency for Healthcare Reseaerch & Quality. The primary focus of the work will be to develop spatial clusters based on geocoded healthcare claims data and then to use regression analysis, incuding multi-level regression and models including instrumental variables and propensity scores to benchmark risk adjusted facility level and regional outcomes (eg. Death, long term debility). In addition, this position will work closely with experts in machine learning to explore the use of these methods to describe previously unrecognized patterns that data reveals. The individual may participate in graduate design course design, graduate course teaching, and assist in the maintenance of the needed infrastructure for carrying out the planned research and educational activities.

  • Statistical programming including SAS, STATA, R, or Matlab
  • Geographic Information Systems (ArcGis)
  • Designing and conducting health services research
  • Writing of academic manuscripts, especially with expertise in describing statistical methods and statistical results
  • Collaborative teamwork across domains (eg. clinical, statistical, economics, engineering, computer science)
  • Publishing novel research findings in appropriate scientific journals and presenting research findings to the scientific community by attending relevant scientific meetings

Qualifications:

Postdoctural trainees must have receieved, as of the beginning date of appointment, Ph.D. in Biostatistics, Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Epidemiology, Biomedical Engineering, Bioinformatics, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent.

The ideal candidate should be familiar with general topics pertaining to statistics, biostatistics, computer science, machine learning, bioinformatics, electrical and computer engineering. The candidate should also know how these disciplines are used in the context of health services research and medicine. The candidate would ideally be familiar with major issues in health policy including healthcare quality measurement, alternative payment models, and health care delivery. Previous working experience in these areas is preferred. A strong publication record is preferred. Working knowledge of technical computing software packages such as Matlab, R, STATA, SAS, etc and tools for data visualization, spatial relationships, data analysis, and data mining/machine learning is a must. The ideal candidate should also have working experience with dry bench research techniques such as server storage, cloud based storage, and web page design. Research training is for postdoctoral training of professionals for the purpose of leading independent research. In all cases, postdoctoral trainees will engage in research, research training, and comparable activities beginning at the time of employment.
