Job Description:
We are seeking a post-doctoral fellow with a focus in the computational analysis of microbiome data who will work with the investigative team to design and develop bioinformatics pipelines for analysis of microbiome data from acquisition and integration through analysis and visualization and to develop customized tools for integrating and analyzing microbiome data in conjunction with clinical, metabolomics, and exposure data. The post-doctoral fellow will be responsible for processing data through bioinformatics pipelines and preparing summaries, presentations, figures, and manuscript sections for the visualization and publication of complex data and results. The post-doctoral fellow will also be responsible for testing and validation of new software and tools and for maintaining detailed documentation of all projects and analyses. Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee. The initial appointment is for one year, renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available. Appointments cannot exceed five years. Minimum Qualifications: A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc) in an appropriate field. Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills. The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues. Experience with Python and R. Preferred Qualifications: At least 2 years of experience in bioinformatics analysis and experience in high throughput computing. Knowledge of NGS technology and concrete skills in bioinformatics analysis for Illumina NGS data. Experience with common bioinformatics methods and software to perform data QA/QC, processing, normalization, alignment, gene expression analysis, microbiome analysis (16s RNA SSU sequences or WGS), such as QIIME, Dada2, and/or Mothur, and statistical analysis. Experience with JavaScript, and/or C/C++ is a plus. Experience with MySQL or Oracle databases and PHP. Knowledge of a Linux environment, running a cluster using SGE and BASH shell scripting, is a plus. Strong oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills. Demonstrated initiative in evaluating and experimenting with new technologies. Independent self-starter, with strong time-management skills.

Collaborators at Emory University are performing on-going investigations of the microbiome (including 16S rRNA gene sequencing and metagenomics sequencing) of pregnant women and their offspring, and the role the microbiome plays in birth outcomes and infant growth and development. The investigative team is multi-disciplinary and involves faculty across Emory’s Health Sciences Schools, including the Schools of Nursing, Medicine, and Public Health.
