Job Description:
We’re currently looking for talented scientists to join our innovative academic-style Postdoc. From our center in Boston, US, you’ll be in a global pharmaceutical environment, contributing to live projects right from the start. You’ll take part in a comprehensive training programme, including a focus on drug discovery and development, given access to our existing Postdoctoral research, and encouraged to pursue your own independent research in cutting edge laboratories. It’s a newly expanding programme spanning a range of therapeutic areas across a wide range of disciplines.

What’s more, you’ll have the support of a leading academic advisor, who’ll provide you with the guidance and knowledge you need to develop your career. This is an exciting area that hasn’t been explored to its full potential, making this an opportunity to make a real difference to the future of medical science.

The emerging age of linked Electronic Health records (EHR) and genomic data offers unique opportunities to advance disease biology and therapeutics in both genome and phenome spaces. Genetic and genomic biomarkers can now be understood within the full phenotypic context of individual-patient disease biology. We are looking for a talented and highly-motivated postdoctoral scientist to join a leading and dynamic global team of experienced bioinformaticians embedded within AstraZeneca's Oncology IMED. In this position, you will have opportunities to advance the next generation of precision oncology through AI and statistical modeling, with the integrated usage of Electronic Health Record (EHR) derived clinical-phenotype data and cancer genetics/genomics. You will strive to identify and validate novel biomarkers that inform on cancer disease subtyping, response to treatment, and generation of new therapeutic hypothesis. You will have chance to access AstraZeneca's licensed EHR resources with linked next-generation sequencing (NGS) profiling and proprietary oncology data to solve pressing oncology problems to help cancer patients.

You'll be co-supervised by both an industrial and academic PI, offering a unique combination of expertise and mentorship. You will be encouraged to present externally and publish your findings in high impact scientific journals.

You will:

  • Develop methods of statistical modeling (AI/machine learning, unsupervised learning, Graph methods, time-series modeling) and visualizations for the integrative usage of EHR and genetic/genomic data to advance precision oncology
  • Identify novel biomarkers for disease subtyping and clinical-outcome prediction (survival, response to treatment, and adverse events)
  • Reveal molecular mechanisms contributing to EHR-based clinical phenotypes
  • Communicate results both within AstraZeneca via global working groups and externally at conferences and through peer reviewed publication
  • Actively engage with AstraZeneca and academic supervisor
  • Collaborate with local postdocs and cross-disciplinary scientists across AstraZeneca
  • Publish scientific papers in high impact journals

Education and Experience required:

Essential:

  • A PhD with a track record of productivity in the areas of bioinformatics, biomedical informatics, biomedical engineering, computational, statistical, applied mathematics, or a relevant scientific discipline
  • Desire for learning and growth in advanced computational research as applied to drug discovery
  • Exposure to computational biology, bioinformatics, or genomics
  • Grasp of advanced machine learning/deep learning methods, computational statistics, and probabilistic modeling
  • Hands-on experience for hypothesis testing in Python and R
  • Hands-on experience organizing data and scripting in Python, Perl, shell script and Linux system
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills
Desirable:
  • Knowledge of oncology and drug discovery
  • Experience of analyzing cancer genetic/genomic data and EHR data
  • Mathematical or statistical modeling in biological data
Skills and Capabilities required:
  • A strong scientific track record, as evidenced by published or accepted papers, as well as oral or poster presentation at scientific conferences
  • Strong passion & commitment to science, and ability to work well within a multidisciplinary-team environment
This is a 3 year program. 2 years will be a Fixed Term Contract, with a 1 year extension which will be merit based. The role will be based at B oston, MA in US with a competitive salary on offer
