Job Description:

ISCB Job Board

Postdoc in Computational BiologyGerman Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in HeidelbergComputational Genome BiologyGermany-Heidelberg The German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) offers a Postdoc position in the computational genome biology group headed by Dr. Bernd Fischer. The research group works on quantitative analysis of genetic and physical interaction networks. Statistics and computational network analysis will be used to predict and understand interactions between genes, proteins and drugs in various ways with the aim to guide targeted drug therapies. The group will further develop methods that integrate available population level genetic data with experimental data.

Understanding gene-gene interactions and gene-drug interactions plays a central role in the development of future personalized drug therapies. We have driven forward the analysis of multivariate genetic interaction maps with multivariate phenotype data. The underlying data consists of automated image-based high-throughput screens with combinatorial gene perturbations. We have developed a novel method to derive temporal, causal and regulatory mechanisms between the genes (Fischer et al., eLife, 2015). Furthermore, the group develops new methods to analyze protein-RNA binding sites (Castello, Fischer, CELL, 2012).

Possible projects include but are not limited to: 1) Bayesian modeling of multivariate genetic interaction data and hierarchical models including cooperativety of genes. 2) Modeling directionality in large-scale cancer sequencing and RNAseq data. 3) Combined modeling of genetic and physical interaction data. 4) Prediction of effects of sequence alterations on genetic and physical interactions. The successful candidate will in general be involved in the computational and statistical analysis of NGS, mass spectrometry or imaging data from collaborative projects. The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in a quantitative or computational science (statistics, computer science, bioinformatics, physics) with a strong background in computational statistics, machine learning or scientific computing. Programming skills in R are of advantage. The candidate should have interest in molecular or medical biology and is expected to work in close collaboration with experimental scientists at DKFZ and other institutes in Heidelberg.

Applicants are encouraged to send an application letter with a half-page description of your future plans, CV including publications, certificates and 2-3 references.
