Job Description:

A postdoc position is now available in the Shen group at Texas A&M University. Our interdisciplinary research is motivated by real-world challenges from biological problems at multiple scales ranging from molecules and systems to big data. We develop and apply computational methods to analyze, predict, and re-engineer biomolecular interactions and biological systems. These methods often involve but are not limited to biomolecular modeling and design, systems analysis and control, optimization, machine learning, probability and statistics, signal processing and beyond.

The NSF-funded postdoctoral researcher is expected to start early 2015 with a flexible date. (S)he is expected to develop optimization and learning algorithms for flexible protein docking mainly (see http://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=1347865). In addition, there are rich opportunities in method development or/and application for modeling and designing protein-ligand interactions at both levels of molecules and systems.

College Station is conveniently located in the middle of a triangle formed by 3 of the 10 largest cities in the United States: Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio. Meanwhile, the small city herself has a lot to offer in life quality and cultural diversity. Texas A&M University is an Equal Opportunity employer.

Preferred qualifications include

1. Ph.D. programs completed or to be completed in computer science, applied mathematics, operation research, computational biology, biophysics, engineering, or other related fields;

2. Strong background and track record in algorithm development in one or more following areas: optimization, machine learning, dimensionality reduction, probabilistic graphical models, systems and control, and statistics;

3. Linux programming experience in implementing algorithms (required) and databases & webservers (plus) in one or more following languages: C/C++, shell scripting, Perl, Python, SQL, XML, PHP, and Java;

4. Experience in protein modeling would be a plus although not required, such as free energy calculation, scoring function training, conformational search, and molecular dynamics.

5. Experience in modeling biological systems would be a plus although not required, such as ordinary / partial / stochastic differential equations, Petri nets, and (probabilistic) Boolean networks.
