Job Summary

The Post-Doctoral Appointee Program is designed to recruit outstanding Ph.D. applicants to assist a line organization in meeting its mission objectives and to provide a professional technical work environment for the employee. The Ph.D. must have been conferred within one to five years prior to employment. These assignments are for a one-year period, with the option at management¿s discretion to serve no more than five additional one-year assignments.

Primary Job Duties

We have a post-doctoral opening for an outstanding bioinformatics researcher in programs focused on biodefense research and bioenergy production. Our projects involve bioinformatic analyses of metagenomic, transcriptomic, and other datasets for sequence-based discovery, detection, and characterization of pathogens and host response mechanisms, as well as for the search of improved enzyme systems for biofuel development.

Required

This position requires a PhD in bioinformatics, biology or computer science, or a related scientific discipline. Other required qualifications include (1) a strong publication record; (2) experience in bioinformatics algorithms, databases, and software tools that are commonly used in the curation, alignment, assembly, and annotation of sequencing data sets ; (3) familiarity with ultrahigh-throughput sequencing technology and the management and processing of large datasets; (4) experience in software development, programming and statistical analysis (e.g., Perl, C/C++, Python, R); (5) the ability to work with a diverse multidisciplinary team to solve complex problems; (6) ability to track and incorporate innovative tools and methods in the public domain, and (7) excellent communication skills.

Desired

Desired qualifications include familiarity with one or more of the following: molecular biology, biochemistry, virology, fungal and bacterial microbiology, bioenergy.
