Job Description:
Position Summary: The candidate’s primary responsibility will be to construct, analyze, simulate and optimize mathematical models of the molecular regulatory networks underlying the proliferation, differentiation and motility of cells of the innate immune system. The models will be expressed in terms of nonlinear ordinary and partial differential equations representing gene expression, protein interactions, cytokine signaling and chemotaxis. When suitable single-cell data are available, these deterministic models of cell population will be translated into stochastic models of molecular interactions in single cells. Success will require (1) close attention to experimental details from our collaborators and from the literature, (2) expertise in building realistic models using chemical rate equations of intracellular reaction networks, of intercellular signaling, and of cell motility, (3) familiarity with nonlinear dynamical systems theory and numerical simulation of deterministic and stochastic models, and (4) facility using software tools for bifurcation analysis and parameter estimation.

The successful applicant will be expected (1) to make significant contributions to the conceptualization and conduct of the project, (2) to take a leading role in writing and publishing this research in peer-reviewed, high-impact scientific journals, and presenting the results at scientific meetings, (3) to participate in the preparation of grant proposals to garner further support for research in systems immunology, and (4) to teach advanced courses in systems biology as needed by the program. In addition, the person filling this position will be expected to participate in lab meetings, to interact productively with graduate and undergraduate students, and to help train, guide and mentor these students under the advisement of Dr. Tyson.

Required Qualifications:

Postdoctoral Associate: The candidate must have (1) a Ph.D. degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., systems biology, biophysical chemistry, applied mathematics, molecular cell biology or computer science), (2) a demonstrable record of interdisciplinary research in molecular systems biology and/or computational cell biology, (3) peer-reviewed publications that document the candidate’s talent and productivity. In addition to a strong background in mathematical modeling, the successful candidate will need good interpersonal and communication skills in order to function effectively in an interdisciplinary team.

Research Scientist: The candidate must have (1) a Ph.D. degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., systems biology, biophysical chemistry, applied mathematics, molecular cell biology or computer science), (2) demonstrated postdoctoral experience in computational cell biology, (3) a demonstrable record of interdisciplinary research in the general area of molecular systems biology, (4) expertise in dynamical systems theory, deterministic and stochastic modeling, and computer simulations and parameter estimation, (5) peer-reviewed publications that document the candidate’s expertise and productivity in these areas. In addition to a strong background in mathematical modeling, the successful candidate will need good interpersonal and communication skills in order to function effectively in an interdisciplinary team.

Preferred Qualifications:

Postdoctoral Associate: Knowledge and experience in the fields of (1) molecular and cellular immunology, (2) dynamical systems theory, (3) deterministic and stochastic modeling, (4) computer simulations and parameter estimation. Most importantly, we are looking for someone committed to a scientific career in molecular/cellular systems biology.

Research Scientist: Knowledge and experience in the fields of molecular and cellular immunology, and commitment to a scientific career in molecular/cellular systems biology.
