Job Description:

We are looking for highly motivated postdoctoral fellow interested in using a systems biology approach to study the regulation of pluripotency and differentiation in the human pluripotent stem cell system. Our laboratory is located in the new Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine (SCRM) building in La Jolla, which is co-occupied by labs from UCSD, Salk, and Sanford-Burnham, and state-of-the-art labs and core facilities. The candidate will be part of a vibrant stem cell community, centered in the SCRM, and encompassing the many research institutions on the surrounding Mesa.

Our lab has two main areas of interest. The first is developing an understanding the network of regulatory factors (including transcription factors, epigenetic marks, and noncoding RNAs) that influence the maintenance of the pluripotent state, as well as transitions between the pluripotent and differentiated state. By combining careful phenotyping of cellular populations, detailed genomic and epigenomic analysis, and focused functional validation, we aim both to learn about the molecular processes that drive human development, as well as to develop tools that will enable the safe use of human pluripotent cells and their derivatives for therapies for human disease.

A new direction for the lab is applying our strengths in genomics and stem cell biology to the discovery of the molecular mechanisms behind pregnancy complications, particularly those that arise from placental dysfunction. We are doing biomarker discovery by analyzing biospecimens from normal and complicated pregnancies using cutting edge “omic” technologies, and using differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells to trophoblast as an in vitro system for validation.

The Fellow will be expected to develop and apply bioinformatic algorithms to interpret genomic, gene expression, and epigenomic microarray and next-generation sequencing data.

The ideal candidate should have:
1) A Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Physics or related field, with exposure to biological systems;
2) Experience in analyzing genomic data;
3) Experience in machine learning;
4) Expert in at least one programming language (MATLAB, R, PERL, Python, JAVA or C/C++);
5) Strong statistical skills.
