Job Description:
The bioinformatics postdoctoral fellow will conduct computational research under the close supervision of a Principal Investigator and will be responsible for contributing to the research activities and ongoing research projects, as well as proposing research projects suitable for external funding at Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute (CHORI). Bioinformatics Postdoctoral Fellows are generally appointed for a limited term, usually one to three years. In certain circumstances, a Postdoctoral Fellow may be promoted to the rank of Senior Bioinformatics Postdoctoral Fellow. The total time spent in the ranks of Bioinformatics Postdoctoral Fellow and Senior Bioinformatics Postdoctoral Fellow will not exceed eight years.

The position involves studying whole genome sequence data to identify the genetic basis of severe disorders in children. The study will use the latest technologies for de novo whole genome sequencing, and will seek to develop new computational methods to identify functional variants in coding and noncoding regions. It will be carried out in collaboration with laboratories at UCSF and UC Berkeley. Additional research opportunities include the informatic analysis of epigenetic variants in animal model systems, and the role of these variants in phenotypic inheritance.

The candidate will have a PhD in an area related to Computational Biology and a strong background in bioinformatics, statistics and genetics. The candidate must have experience in the analysis of massively parallel sequencing data (DNA and/or RNA), and be familiar with widely used genomic databases and software. Experience with statistical analysis tools such as R is a must, and knowledge of computing in UNIX with scripting languages such as Python is highly recommended. The candidate must have excellent written and oral communications skills, and be capable of working in large collaborative teams.
