This position will report to principal investigators that are faculty members in the Clinical Sciences department and are housed in the Flint Animal Cancer Center.

Position Summary

The Flint Animal Cancer Center has received 3 years of funding from the Anschutz foundation to explore the molecular landscape of canine cancers. We propose to utilize this funding to genetically sequence four common canine cancers with significant similarity to their human counterparts with the goal of identifying conserved gene mutations that closely align to human cancers. We are advertising this postdoctoral research position to identify an individual with expertise in Bioinformatic analysis to aid in the conduct and analysis of next generation sequencing studies to identify these driving mutations and confirm their role in the pathogenesis of canine cancers.

Required Job Qualifications

Advanced Degree: PhD, MD, or DVM Experience in Bioinformatic analysis of next generation sequencing data and publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Preferred Job Qualifications

Experience in genetic analysis of cancer models preferred but not required. Diversity Statement Personal and professional commitment to diversity as demonstrated by involvement in teaching, research, creative activity, service to the profession and/or diversity/inclusion activities.

Job Duty Category: Bioinformatic Analysis

Duty/Responsibility

This individual will prepare samples and conduct bioinformatics analysis of whole exome and RNA sequencing from canine and human tumor samples to identify genetic drivers in canine cancers. This individual will also conduct studies to validate identified genetic mutations and assess their impact on cellular function and sensitivity to existing and emerging therapeutic treatments for cancer. To accomplish these duties, knowledge of Python or R-based bioinformatics analysis pipelines and the ability to effectively develop code to analyze data using publicly available bioinformatics platforms is required.

Percentage Of Time: 50

Job Duty Category: Functional relevance of identified Genetic Mutations

Duty/Responsibility Plan and carry out experiments to confirm the validity of identified mutations in canine cancers. Assess the functional relevance of the identified mutations using pharmacological and molecular biological analysis. Prepare manuscripts for publication and assist in the preparation of grant applications Prepare presentations of research results for local, national and international meetings Percentage Of Time: 50
