Application deadline: 17. April 2017

Applications shall be marked: ref 2017/798

The Faculty of Biosciences, Fisheries and Economics (BFE) UiT The Arctic University of Norway has a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position vacant in microbial ecology/ molecular bioinformatics. The position is financed by The Norwegian Research Council and attached to the Department of Arctic and Marine Biology (AMB) and the research group Microorganisms and Plants.

The position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow is a fixed term position for a period of three years. The main objective of the appointment as a post-doctoral research fellow is to qualify for work in senior academic position. No one may be appointed to more than one fixed term period as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the same institution

The Department of Arctic and Marine Biology (AMB) includes 6 research groups. Research and teaching at AMB has a broad span, from molecular mechanisms at cellular/subcellular levels via studies of adaptations at the organismal level, to ecological interactions in aquatic and terrestrial environments. The staff counts 53 permanent scientists, 26 technicians, 7 administrative positions and 60 temporary employees (researchers, postdocs, PhD research fellows, technicians).

The position’s field of research/field of work

The postdoctor will take part in two international projects, CLIMARCTIC and METHANOBASE. For both projects the Norwegian partner has responsibility for analyses of sequence data, addressing both microbial communities and microbial metabolism in the ecosystem.

1. CLIMARCTIC-Climate change impacts on Arctic soil and lake microbiomes, 70% of the position. CLIMARCTIC aims at studying the potential effects of climate change on microbial diversity and genetic functions in relation to nutrient and carbon cycling of High Arctic communities in soils, wetlands and lakes. CLIMARCTIC is a project in the BiodivERsA program (http://www.biodiversa.org/) and involves partners from Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Spain and Norway. See http://www.climarctic.ugent.be/index.php

2. METHANOBASE-METHAnogenic biodiversity and activity in Arctic and sub-Antarctic Ecosystems affected by climate change, 30% of the position. The project will investigate the intricate relations between microbial diversity and methane emissions in Arctic, sub-Arctic and sub-Antarctic ecosystems, under natural (baseline) conditions and in response to simulated temperature increments. METHANOBASE is a project in the ERAnet-LAC program (http://www.eranet-lac.eu/) and involves partners in France, Chile, Belgium, Norway, Uruguay, Siberia (Russia), Alaska (USA).

Qualifications required

We are seeking a candidate with documented strong competence at the interface between microbial ecology and molecular bioinformatics/environmental sequence analyses. The candidate must hold a PhD in biology with background in microbiology, molecular biology and bioinformatics and knowledge about ecosystems. It is an advantage with knowledge of Arctic terrestrial ecosystems. Documented competence in scripting using Linux or other languages and statistical analyses using R or similar is an absolute requirement. Experience in the analysis of environmental sequences (metagenomes/metatranscriptomes) would be advantageous. The project includes active international collaboration and the successful applicant must be willing to work both in Tromsø as well as spend time in the collaboration groups. The postdoc must work independently, interact with the collaborating partners and take responsibility for development of the projects. Fieldwork will be a part of the CLIMARCTIC project, so experience in planning and performing fieldwork will be an advantage.
