Job Description:
The LaBarge Lab at City of Hope is expanding its research team focused on preventing aging-related breast cancers. With mentorship from the principal investigator, the successful candidate will carry out independent research on delineating the mechanisms of, and manipulation of, aging-related epigenetic states in human breast. The successful candidate will learn to bridge the disciplines of computational biology and cell biology, using cell-based functional screening and engineered cell culture microenvironments to probe the causes and consequences of aging at the tissue level. We have an eye towards translation, so an open mind and a fearless approach towards hard problems are essential traits. The successful candidate will be exposed to an excellent training and research environment at City of Hope.

Essential Responsibilities:

-Master existing, and aid in further development of, primary human mammary epithelial cell culture technology, building breast tissue-mimetics, and fabrication of cell culture substrata.

-Perform analysis of fixed and live cells, in tissue culture and animal tissues, to investigate the dynamics and consequences of aging-related epigenetic states. This includes samples produced from the HMEC Bank, clinical samples, and archival samples.

-Perform and analyze IP and ChIP experiments to assess protein-protein interactions and distributions of proteins across the genome.

-Perform computational analysis of data, and form molecular associations between molecular states and cell-based functional phenotypes.

-Supervise research assistants in performing experiments and interpreting data.

-Conform to all laboratory cell culture practices, and cell culture record keeping practices, and maintain an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook.

-Contribute to the general resources of the laboratory and in its overall progress by sharing expertise and materials at meetings and seminars, being a good neighbor to other labs, and helping to maintain a safe and efficient laboratory environment.

-Present results of research at national and international conferences.

-Contribute to the progress of all lab projects when appropriate, and be responsible for preparing manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed literature.

Minimum Education and Skills Required for Consideration:

Essential Qualifications

-Requires a PhD, MD, or MD/PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology, or Computational Biology, or equivalent degree; With an MD degree there must be demonstration of applicable bench research expertise.

-Current knowledge of the fields of epigenetics, cell and tissue biology, biostatistics, and cancer biology.

-Extensive experience in current experimental approaches using tissue culture cells, including: molecular cloning, tagging proteins, gene transfers using lenti- and retroviruses, performing siRNA and shRNA experiments, preparation and nucleic acids.

-Experience in performing and analyzing biochemical, genomic, epigenomic, and IF and time-lapse experiments.

-Experience or high comfort level working in R or MatLab programing environments.

-If no proven experience with computational approaches, then the candidate must have a thirst to learn it.

-Ability to provide excellent oral and written presentations of scientific work.

-Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research and organize data for publication and presentations.

-Ability to work in a team environment, and to supervise research assistants in performing and analyzing experiments.

-Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams.

-Strong record of scientific publications.

Marginal qualifications

-Current knowledge of the breast cancer field

-Experience in primary human mammary epithelial cell culture, and acquisition of clinical samples
