Job Description:
Drs. Neeraj J. Agrawal, Daniel Griffin and Cindy Ren in the Process Development department are seeking to immediately fill a Postdoctoral Fellow position.

The appointment is 2 years, with an option to extend an additional year contingent on the progress.

The postdoc will work across functions with experts in the Drug Substance Technologies, Drug Product Technologies and Attribute Science Data Engineering groups in Process Development.

The centralization and deployment of a “big data” infrastructure within Amgen has enabled the curation of large quantities of data from “real world” Manufacturing, Quality and Process Development. Furthermore, innovations around automation and high throughput technologies have created novel capabilities for generating significantly larger data sets. With the advancement of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, there is now a real opportunity to capitalize on this data to derive novel and actionable insights. The objective of this project is to meet that opportunity, and specifically, develop and apply new Machine Learning/AI tools to advance and streamline process development within Amgen.

Specific tasks will vary, but the project will include the following objectives:

  • Apply machine learning to derive new insights and identify trends from historical data, new development data and external literature
  • Utilize these insights to recommend optimal process parameters and drug product compositions and direct the design and development of processes for future molecules and modalities
  • Develop effective means of extracting historical data from multiple sources and set up infrastructure to collate and structure that data
  • Utilize novel visualization techniques, enumeration methods and statistical analysis to effectively draw conclusions and determine causal factors from high throughput, multivariate studies
The application of Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence to predict process outcomes and automate decision making is a novel approach to process development. By coupling these techniques with automation capabilities and historical data, substantial opportunities exist to accelerate the development workflow and to develop differentiating strategies.

The successful candidate will work with process development and data science experts to develop and advance the above listed objectives. The postdoc will also have the opportunity to gain a broad understanding of process development and manufacturing across multiple modalities, as well as apply novel data science techniques to critical Amgen processes.

Basic Qualifications: Ph.D. at the time of appointment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. at the time of appointment in Chemical Engineering/Biological Engineering/Mechanical Engineering/Computer Science/Bioinformatics
  • Strong statistics and programming background with proven experience delivering on data science and machine learning projects
  • Familiarity and background with pharmaceutical/biotechnology process development
  • Experience with data analysis and modeling methods particularly in their application to process systems
  • Experience in SQL, Python, R and Matlab
  • Familiarity with DevOps and good software practices (i.e. version control, continuous integration, test driven development)
  • Strong publication record
