Job Description:

Postdoctoral Fellow - Senior Bioinformatician
Salary range: £30655 to £38428pa plus excellent benefits Fixed-term for 3 years

We are looking for a creative, motivated and collaborative bioinformatician/postdoctoral scientist to join the Host-Microbiota Interactions Laboratory (www.lawleylab.com) investigating interactions between host and microbiota during health and disease.  The group has projects focused on infectious diseases, antibiotic therapies, autoimmune diseases and early life colonization. The lab is very collaborative and consists of microbiologists, bioinformaticians, cell biologists and mouse biologists so there is ample capacity for the individual to develop new skill sets. The group is well resourced giving the individual access to cutting edge genomic and proteomic tools (host and microbiota), human organoids, transgenic mice, germ free mice, a human microbiota bacterial culture collection and state of the art anaerobic culturing facility. The lab is focused on translational science with links to the biotech industry.

The Lawley Lab has developed unique capabilities to culture the majority of bacteria in the human intestinal microbiota (Browne et al. 2016. Nature). The Lab maintains an extensive bacterial culture collection of >300 species and has sequenced all species to generate reference genome database (Forster et al. 2016. NAR). The individual will use advanced genomic analysis methods and generally focus on establishing the phylogenies and accessory genomes of dominant bacterial clades the human intestinal microbiota to assist in identifying functional attributes of bacteria that promote health. This is a unique position as the project leverages a comprehensive human microbiota culture collection and associated genomic data combined with cutting edge laboratory culturing and animal model facilities in a world leading genome research institute.

The applicant should have a strong background in bioinformatics, a knowledge of microbiology and have an interest in learning about host-pathogen interactions and the biology of host-associated microbial communities during health and disease.

Key Responsibilities include:

Manage and analyse large-scale whole-genome sequencing datasets and their associated projects Perform analysis on datasets generated by next generation sequencing platforms Integrate sequence data with biological experiments/phenotypic data Liaise with collaborators and coordinate projects Train group members Develop software and develop new methods to analyse sequence data
