Job Description:
We are seeking to appoint a highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Sandhu team at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. The role will have overall responsibility to lead projects involving the large-scale genome wide association studies in diverse African populations, with association analyses of rare and common genetic variants with cardiovascular, metabolic and infectious disease traits. The candidate will be expected to interpret GWAS results in the context of transcriptomic, and other functional data. These projects will entail examining the genetic diversity among populations, and understanding associated analytic complexities. The work will involve designing the primary analyses, developing and implementing necessary analytical methods and pipelines. The sucessful candidate will be aware of, and participate in strategic planning at the team level, and will be involved in driving forward the adoption of new sequencing technologies, such as 10x genomics and PacBio. The role is responsible, among other tasks, for the preparation and analysis of large datasets, as well as managing collaborative relationships within the frame of large international consortia. Training and supporting international researchers in large-scale genome analysis will also be part of the role core accountabilities. Essential Skills: • Applicants should ideally have a first degree in a highly numerate subject (e.g. natural sciences, maths, statistics or computer science) or have a degree in another subject coupled with extensive experience working with quantitative data; • PhD in relevant discipline, • Proven understanding and experience in the fields of statistical genetics, high-throughput genome data analysis, and genomic databases; • Firm grasp of statistical genetics and tools fundamentals; • Experience with multivariate statistics or statistical modelling; • Strong computational skills, particularly in data parsing, cleansing, data modelling, analysis, and database design and implementation; • Knowledge and experience working in a unix/linux environment; • Demonstrated programming skills in shell scripting (e.g. bash, tcsh), interpreted/scripting languages (e.g. Perl, Python, R); • Experience with cluster computing; • Good written and verbal communication skills; • Ability to review, synthesise, and present scientific data and methods; • Experience providing advice, training and support to other researchers in the areas of bioinformatics and data analysis; • Demonstrable good time management and project management and problem solving skills; • The ability to work well within a team. Ideal Skills: • A PhD in computer science, computational biology, biostatistics, bioinformatics, or similar fields is highly desired although not strictly necessary; • An understanding and experience with basic population genetics; • Direct experience processing NGS data (e.g. from Illumina platforms) for the identification of SNPs and structural variants; • Experience in using and integrating information from the main public bioinformatics resources; • Familiarity with the capabilities and limitations of NGS platforms and informatics pipelines, so that data can be appropriately integrated into analyses.

Salary range: £31,115 to £39,004 dependent on experience. Fixed-term 3 years. The successful applicant may be required to travel occasionally to Africa.
