Job Description:
The Department of Agricultural & Biosystems Engineering at the University of Arizona invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher in Dr. Bonnie Hurwitz’s research group (www.hurwitzlab.org). Research in Dr. Hurwitz’s group focuses on developing novel data science techniques for elucidating systems-level biology at the interface between the environment, microbes, and their hosts. The candidate will assist in developing a data discovery platform called Planet Microbe, to integrate oceanographic ‘omics data and analyses with relevant contextual and environmental data. Applicants in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, or biological sciences are encouraged to apply. The position is available immediately and may be renewed annually.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop Planet Microbe, a data discovery platform for oceanographic data
  • Develop and validate an advanced data search engine to create virtual datasets produced through user-defined queries using oceanographic measurements, features, and thresholds.
  • Connect and explore disparate sequence datasets including: machine learning, distance-based algorithms, or big data analytics
  • Apply imaginative solutions to complex and interdisciplinary problems, with a dedicated interest in data science research.
  • Participate in producing peer-reviewed publications
Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must have a PhD or expected PhD by Summer 2017 in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, biological sciences, or a related area. Experience with metagenomics, genomics, systems biology and bioinformatics. Experience in programming and software development, especially R, Python and/or Perl.The candidate must be highly motivated and able to work both independently and with a collaborative team. Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to candidates with previous experience in the following areas: high performance computing, systems biology, statistics, and data mining.
