Job Description:
The University of Arizona Cancer Center and Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine are seeking highly motivated candidates for the full-time position of Postdoctoral Research Associate III in the Laboratory of Dr. Curtis Thorne (thornelab.org). Dr. Thorne’s NIH-funded research team incorporates experimental and computational approaches to identify molecular mechanisms controlling cell fate, self-organization and disease progression of regenerative tissues. Current studies focus on signal processing and kinase networks in the intestinal epithelium, a prime example of highly regenerative tissue in humans. We use complex intestinal 2D and 3D organoid culture models to test our hypotheses. The laboratory generates, analyzes, and integrates large image data sets to measure high dimensional single cell signatures from healthy and cancer cells from diverse genetic and environmental perturbations. Through our novel organoid culture models, quantitative high-throughput imaging and drug discovery efforts, we are finding new ways to understand and repair these networks. The successful Postdoctoral candidate will possess a biochemical/cell/computational skill set appropriate to accomplish the lab’s goals. In addition, they will possess the drive required to perform high quality cancer research and will be able to work productively with others and alone. Duties & Responsibilities:
- Lead a research project in close collaboration with the PI and other lab members. Innovate new areas of experimental and computational inquiry.
- Mentor junior lab members and contribute to a productive scientific environment.
- Maintain detailed records and disseminate research findings in meetings and as manuscripts in scientific journals.
- Apply for independent funding and contribute to grant proposals submitted by the PI.
- There may be additional duties assigned as it relates to this position.
- Skilled in cell/molecular laboratory techniques and/or computational analysis.
- Excellent organizational/record-keeping skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Self-motivated and enthusiastic for science.
- PhD or MD in molecular or cellular biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, computational science, immunology, biotechnology, biomedical engineering, or related field by time of hire.
- Documented ability to conduct original research.
- Thorough understanding of signal transduction and mechanisms of cancer progression.
- Experience with high-content imaging and computational image processing and analysis.
- Proficiency in LINUX/UNIX, R, Matlab, and Python.
