Job Description:
The Biosciences Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a microbiologist to work on multi-institutional projects. The successful post-doctoral fellow will apply, utilize and develop novel methods toward understanding the interactions between bacterial community structure and function, and contaminants including metals (heavy metals and radionuclides). This will include the determining and characterizing the biotransformation of these metals, the resultant biogeochemistry, and their effect on the microbial community populations. Whole community microbial ecology will be coupled to cutting edge model community construction and assessment in efforts to close the lab to field gap in our knowledge base. Particular metals of interest include Hg, U, and Cr. Existing techniques will include controlled cultivation, ICP-MS analysis of Hg species, U(VI) quantification, GC, GC-MS, IC, HPLC, de-novo population and isolate genome sequencing, genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics as well as meta-omics, (RT)-PCR, q(RT)-PCR, and genetic manipulations. Experience in preparing libraries for sequencing and post-sequencing bioinformatics for assessment of microorganisms and microbial communities is essential (eg. Qiime, R, ARB, MOTHUR, BLAST, {Meta}Velvet). Major Duties/Responsibilities: The successful candidate will join a multi-disciplinary team of investigators who apply advanced and integrated techniques to understand the physiology and ecology of microorganisms in support of US Dept. of Energy missions in remediation and systems biology. There will be opportunities to be involved in areas of this, and perhaps other projects, which will utilize several approaches. These range from basic biogeochemistry to metabolic modeling to cutting edge genomics in order to develop new ways of understanding the role of microorganisms in metal and radionuclide biotransformations. Qualifications: A Ph.D. in biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, genetics, bioinformatics or related field is required. Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The following skills are required for this position: - Aerobic and Anaerobic cultivation is required; experience with fermentation/controlled cultivation is desired - Design and execution of biochemical assays to investigate enzyme-catalyzed processes - Molecular biology techniques including nucleic acid extraction and purification, PCR, qPCR, RT-PCR - Experience with bioinformatics programs for assessing DNA and mRNA sequencing is essential - Effective writing and presentation skills, demonstrated by a strong publication record from previous research - Desire to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team - Experience in preparing libraries for sequencing and post-sequencing bioinformatics for assessment of microorganisms and microbial communities is essential (eg. Qiime, R, ARB, MOTHUR, BLAST, {Meta}Velvet). This position is a temporary, full-time assignment for 24 months, contingent on successful performance and continued funding.
