Job Description:
An opportunity is available for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Bioinformatics and Systems Biology has become available to join the School of Biomedical and Healthcare Sciences (SoB&HS) within the Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry (PUPSMD). PUPSMD was ranked as the top medical school in the UK in REF2014 and has a growing reputation for world-class research, underpinned by state-of-the-art genomic and proteomic technologies, cell and molecular biology and bioinformatics. Research within SoB&HS is organized within the Biomedical Research Group and includes the areas of neuroscience, cancer and ‘infection, immunity, inflammation’. This new post represents an exciting opportunity to develop and to apply bioinformatics and systems biology tools within these biomedical research areas.

We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher who will construct and study models of molecular networks that underlie physiological and pathophysiological processes. Initially, you will apply systems biology approaches to established projects including neural stem cell regulation (PI: Claudia Barros) and nerve regeneration (PI: David Parkinson). The necessary integration and visualisation of heterogeneous datasets will require both a good biological understanding and strong analytical skills. Beyond the application to specific projects, you will develop new computational approaches and software tools for analysis and modelling of molecular networks for targeted interventions, which can then be applied to a broad range of biological processes. The research is expected to significantly contribute towards a better understanding of the structure and dynamics of molecular networks.

You will work with Prof. Matthias Futschik as a member of the recently established bioinformatics group at the new Derriford Research Facility, a £15m building equipped with excellent facilities and designed to enhance collaboration between computational and experimental research groups at the Plymouth University and clinical staff at the nearby Plymouth hospital. Thus, possibilities exist for later experimental work in projects. The post will provide opportunities for initiative and to develop research projects at the local, national and international level, which will be strongly supported. Thus, it is an ideal post for ambitious future leaders of the field.

You will have a PhD in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Molecular Biology or a related area, a proven record of successful bioinformatics analyses and a good publication record. Proficiency in computational data analysis or modelling is expected. Since the work involves close collaboration with researchers across different disciplines, strong presentational and communication skills are required. Expertise in programming languages such as R, Perl, Python, Java, etc. and in developing new computational approaches and tools would be advantageous.
