Job Description:
The Goldman lab in the Department of Biology at Oberlin College invites applications for a full-time postdoctoral research position in computational biology. This is a one-year, non-continuing position with the potential of renewal for one additional year. The postdoctoral fellow will work with Dr. Aaron Goldman on a NASA -funded research project investigating the early evolution of metabolic pathways. The research, which will be entirely computational in nature, seeks to identify the earliest metabolic pathways and is part of a larger research collaborative involving origin of life laboratories at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the University of Southern California. The postdoctoral fellow will have the opportunity to mentor Oberlin undergraduates assisting with the research. The position has a preferred start date between October 15 and November 30, 2017. Responsibilities : The research will involve the reconstruction of metabolic pathways present in the last universal common ancestor represented by the root of the tree of life. The postdoctoral fellow will then work with Dr. Goldman and other collaborators at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the University of Southern California to identify which of these ancient pathways may have been viable in geochemical settings pertinent to the origin of life. Required Qualifications : Required qualifications include: 1) a PhD in a relevant field; 2) proficiency in at least one programming language; and research experience in computational biology, bioinformatics, genomics, evolutionary biology, or related field.
