The project has two main parts that are associated USDA-ARS project entitled "Development of Novel Tools to Manage Fungal Plant Pathogens that Cause Postharvest Decay of Pome Fruit to Reduce Food Waste". The participant will conduct research that will entail whole genome sequencing, RNAseq and comparative genomics of Penicillium spp . that cause postharvest decay of pome fruit. The participant will also learn to conduct a functional analysis of gene candidates that are suspected to be mediated virulence in P. expansum during apple fruit decay using gene depletion or RNAi via Agro-mediated transformation. The participant may also have the chance to be involved in other projects in the lab including: studying the genomics of fungicide resistance in Penicillium spp . and other topics as time permits or that arise.

The appointment is full-time for 12 months, with an anticipanted start date of June 1, 2018, and may be renewed based upon recommendation of the ARS and availability of funding. The selected applicant will receive a monthly stipend as support for their living and other expenses during this appointment as well as a health insurance stipend supplement to help offset the cost of health insurance.
