Postdoctoral Research Scientist in Cancer Genetics and Evolution
Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics, Roosevelt Drive, Headington, Oxford, OX3 7BN
Grade 7: £30,434 – £37,394 with a discretionary range to £40,847 p.a.
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist in Cancer Genetics and Evolution to join the Tomlinson group. The group’s main interests are susceptibility to cancer and related diseases, functional genetics of cancer genes, and the roles of selection and genomic instability in tumour evolution. The group has combined expertise in human genetics, population genetics, molecular biology and models of disease.
You will principally work on setting up and developing mathematical models of human tumour evolution, including the analysis of genetic data that will be used to set up and test those models. Your focus will be on tumours of the gastrointestinal tract. You will have a diverse range of responsibilities, including programming, implementing software to manipulate and process genetic data, and planning of experiments to test hypotheses generated by the computational work. You will build strong links to other group members and to collaborators involved in computational analysis and experimental work on cancer.
You will have a A PhD in a relevant subject or substantial postdoctoral experience, and a background with strong mathematical and programming skills or in bioinformatics and/or analysis of large molecular data sets. You will have academic and technical ability to as high a level as possible and have the ability to learn rapidly and to master several techniques. You will also be able to demonstrate commitment to high standards, including record keeping and have good oral, written communication skills. You will need to be able to work both as part of a team and with some degree of independence. Experience in mathematical modelling would be desirable.
The position is fixed-term until 31st December 2017 in the first instance and is funded by ERC Senior Investigator Award EVOCAN.
