Job Description:
We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Staff Member to perform research and development in environmental and medical microbiome using molecular and bioinformatics techniques. This position is in the Biosciences and Biotechnology Division.

Essential Duties:

- Conduct research and development in microorganism analysis using microbiological and molecular detection techniques such as whole metagenome DNA sequencing, amplicon sequencing, RNA-Seq, DNA microarray.

- Design, implement, and analyze techniques and computing approaches to enhance sensitivity of microbial detection via sequencing and microarray protocols.

- Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design, and execution of research to address defined problems.

- Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars and/or technical meetings.

- Organize, analyze, and present data from research at seminars, technical meetings, national and international conferences.

- Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment and other national laboratories and industry to accomplish research goals.

- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.

- Maintain an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook including complete records of experiments.

- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

- Recent PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, molecular microbiology, biological sciences or related field.

- Experience in molecular techniques including sample preparation, nucleic acid extraction and amplification, DNA sequencing, DNA microarrays and multiplexed assays.

- Experience in developing and applying new bioinformatics software tools to solve problems in computational genomics.

- Experience with programming skills in some aspect of computational biology.

- Experience in genomic sequence analysis.

- Ability as an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution; ability to understand and analyze experimental results and work as part of solution-development teams that span hardware, software, and domain applications.

- Ability to develop independent research projects as demonstrated through publication of peer-reviewed literature.

- Proficient verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information.

Desired Qualifications:

- Experience with scientific computing applications for genomics and working knowledge of Unix/Python/PERL/R/Bioconductor.

- Experience with metagenomic sequence analysis and microarray probe design.

- Visualization and data analysis experience.
