Job Description:
We are seeking to appoint a highly skilled Principal Bioinformatician to join the Sandhu team at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute.

The sucessful candidate will have overall responsibility to implement and develop as needed analysis pipelines for whole genome/transcriptomic/targeted sequencing data, using next and third generation sequencing platforms, including linked read (10x genomics) and single molecule (SMRT PacBio) sequencing, specifically in genetically diverse popualtions.

The role will provide the applicant with the opportunity to work with large-scale high resolution genomes from indigenous diverse populations, at the frontline of methodological development in genetics. The post holder will participate in strategic planning at the team level, and will drive forward the adoption of new sequencing technologies. The role is responsible, among other tasks, for the preparation and analysis of large datasets, as well as a for managing collaborative relationships within the frame of large international consortia.

Essential Skills:

-Applicants should ideally have a first degree in a highly numerate subject (e.g. natural sciences, maths, statistics or computer science) or have a degree in another subject coupled with extensive experience working with quantitative data

-Proven understanding and experience in the fields of genomics, data processing, high-throughput data analysis, and genomic databases

-Understanding of genome structure is a must

-Direct experience processing NGS data (e.g. from Illumina platforms) for the identification of SNPs and structural variants

-Firm grasp of univariate statistical analysis fundamentals

-Critical and analytic thinking around problems

-Strong computational skills, particularly in data parsing, cleansing, data modelling, analysis, and database design and implementation

-Knowledge and experience working in a unix/linux environment

-Demonstrated programming skills in shell scripting (e.g. bash, tcsh), interpreted/scripting languages (e.g. Perl, Python, R)

-Experience with cluster computing

-Ability to anticipate needs and problems while creating solutions;

-Good written and verbal communication skills

-Ability to review, synthesise, and present scientific data and methods

-Experience providing advice, training and support to other researchers in the areas of bioinformatics and data analysis

-Demonstrable good time management and project management skills

-The ability to work within a team

Ideal Skills:

-A PhD in computer science, computational biology, biostatistics, bioinformatics, or similar fields is highly desired although not strictly necessary

-Experience processing NGS data from the emerging technologies developed by PacBio, 10x Genomics, BioNano, Dovetail, ect.

-Experience in using and integrating information from the main public bioinformatics resources

-Experience with multivariate statistics or statistical modelling

-Familiarity with the capabilities and limitations of NGS platforms and informatics pipelines, so that data can be appropriately integrated into analyses

-Programming skills in compiled language(s) (e.g. Java, C, C++)

Salary £38,989 to £49,602 plus excellent benefits.
