Principal ScientistMedImmune, LLCResearch BioinformaticsUSA-MD-Gaithersburg The Research Bioinformatics Scientist is primarily responsible for advancing scientific knowledge through the use and development of Bioinformatics tools and approaches, and applying that knowledge to drug development programs and innovative Research Science. This scientifically passionate individual will apply their extensive experience in the analysis, collection, mining and integration of multiple -omics data sets including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, flow cytometry, and microRNA using bioinformatics and system biology approaches to advance our understanding of biological pathways, networks, and genetic interactions.

The successful candidate will support drug development projects and programs and work closely with both therapeutic area scientists and core informatics scientists to establish integrative informatics technologies and services that accelerate MedImmune's biologics drug development initiatives. This position reports into the Vice President of R&D Bioinformatics.

This role will have the opportunity to engage with strategic investments in the areas of target identification, integrative informatics, big data, -omics technologies, scientific portfolio knowledge management, predictive science, precision healthcare, and the use of patient information in biopharmaceutical R&D. The successful candidate, working with members of the bioinformatics team, will be responsible the delivery of data processes, tools, and methods to manage drug project information and knowledge.

This role resides within R&D, and will work collaboratively within Research Bioinformatics and across therapeutic area teams to design, develop, and implement tools, systems, and methods to facilitate the mining of large complex multi-platform datasets and advance our understanding of disease. Education:
B.S. degree (required) in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Data Science, Computer Science, Information Management or related field. Advanced degree (M.S./Ph.D. or equivalent experience preferred) in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Systems Biology, Immunology or related field.

Position:
* 10-13 years experience within a pharmaceutical/biotech company, pharmaceutical information provider, or other relevant biomedical research environment. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Life Sciences Healthcare industry and how it operates desirable.
* Solid knowledge of informatics tools and visualization/data mining packages (e.g. Spotfire, IPA, Metacore, ArrayStudio, R, MatLab, GEO, genome visualization packages/browsers) and aptitude for adapting to complex new analysis packages and using them to their full potential.
* Proficiency in common programming/scripting languages (e.g. SQL, R, Python, Perl, JAVA) and their application in biomedical research.
* Proven record of working with biomedical researchers to develop and apply informatics solutions, skills, and tools.
* First-hand experience in the analysis and interpretation of large, complex datasets. Familiarity with multiple R&D data types, especially as they relate to therapeutic area research.
* Development and delivery of formal and informal training and supporting materials to non-experts.
* Demonstrated successful experience working on complex, cross-functional project teams.
* Proven capacity to communicate effectively with technical and scientific colleagues alike, in formal presentations and small group meetings.
* Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Desirable:
* Demonstrated contributions in target discovery, indication discovery, and patient-disease stratification initiatives are highly desirable.
* Proven track record of publishing relevant bioinformatics or systems biology results in peer-reviewed journals.
* Direct experience in the development and implementation of large-scale biological databases and related activities; along with developing interactive web-based interfaces.
* Proficiency in Biostatistics.
* Experience developing rich visualizations for complex scientific data sets.
* Understanding of the regulatory requirements surrounding the handling and analysis of patient related information (GCDMP).
* Prior experience working in a therapeutic drug development area or antibody research setting.
* Demonstrated scientific knowledge of cell biology, molecular biology, or immunology, especially as it relates to biomedical research and development (targeted therapies, immunotherapies and stem cell therapies).
