Job Description:
This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position. The Department of Biological Sciences combines an international reputation for excellence in research with a substantial teaching mission. It is one of 10 academic units in the College of Science (Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Economics, Geosciences, Mathematics, Physics, Psychology, Statistics, School of Neuroscience, and Academy of Integrated Science).

Required Qualifications:

Potential candidates must have a Ph.D. in biological sciences or a closely related field, demonstrated administrative and programmatic leadership experience, and a broad understanding of the life sciences. He or she should have an exceptional record of accomplishment, including demonstrated strength in research as evidenced by outstanding publications and sustained extramural funding, and in teaching and professional service, qualifying them for appointment at the rank of Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences. The position requires a leader with vision, an open and inclusive management style and the ability to communicate effectively at all levels within the university.

Preferred Qualifications:

In addition to the above required qualifications, it is preferred that candidates have a strong interest in alumni relations and philanthropy and experience in interdisciplinary research.

We play a central role in interdisciplinary research on campus, which includes engagement in the Global Change Center, the Center for Soft Matter and Biological Physics, the Biocomplexity Institute, the Fralin Life Sciences Institute, the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute, and nine out of Virginia Tech’s 14 Interdisciplinary Graduate Education Programs. The Department offers Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Biological Sciences, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology.

The Department Head provides leadership in the management and administration of the department, with oversight in areas of faculty and staff recruiting, retention and promotion; diversity and inclusion; curriculum development; budgeting and reporting; facilities maintenance and improvement; gifts and endowments; and support of external research funding. The Department Head advocates for the research, teaching and service missions of the department at the local, national, and international levels, and focuses on achieving strategic goals within the department, college, and university.

The Department Head reports to the Dean of the College of Science, and maintains liaisons with other leadership within the college, the university, state and federal agencies, and relevant professional associations.
