Job Description:
A programmer analyst position is now open within the Genomic Sciences and Precision Medicine Center (GSPMC) at the Medical College of Wisconsin. GSPMC scientists work at the interface of genomics, bioinformatics, and clinical research using genomic approaches to understand disease. We translate knowledge gained from the laboratory bench and genomics research, to patients in our affiliated hospital partnerships. This position interfaces with scientists to design and implement software for data acquisition, integration, mining and visualization. The successful candidate will work as part of a collaborative and agile team of biologists, geneticists, and bioinformaticians working on genomic research studies and implementation of systems that meaningfully convey that knowledge to clinicians with the goal of improving patient care.

Essential Duties:

  • Work with bioinformatics leadership to implement essential DevOps components for novel software solutions in genomics and clinical research
  • Assist in the planning and lead implementation of novel software tools for genomics data visualization that facilitate data interpretation
  • Design, code, test, debug, modify, and document applications for use in basic science research and genomic analysis in a cost-effective and efficient manner with limited instruction or guidance.
  • Assist in the development and/or refinement of data analysis and integration methodology and pipelines.
  • Interact with user and IS team to define requirements and develop solutions
  • Oversee Lab Information Management System (LIMS) workflows for API-based data import and export
  • Work with DBA and system administrator to implement and optimize databases and data storage methods
  • Prepare detailed specifications for project management including, but not limited to, estimating, scheduling and instructing on a per-project basis.
  • Perform related responsibilities as required.

Position Requirements:

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Bioinformatics or Computational Biology. Degree in Computer Science with strong biology background also acceptable. Master’s degree in Bioinformatics preferred.

Experience: 2 years of progressively more responsible experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

The successful candidate will have experience in software development with demonstrated proficiency with programming languages and systems commonly used in genomics and bioinformatics. Relevant experience and proficiencies may include python, Java, PHP, Perl, relational databases (e.g. MySQL, Oracle), or experience in a statistical programming language (e.g. R, MATLAB). Experience in application development and deployment is preferred.

While not required, an understanding of biological systems and familiarity with basic molecular biology, genetics and bioinformatics techniques will facilitate team communications. Candidates with a more limited biological background, but with an active interest in expanding their expertise in this area are also encouraged to apply. Experience in integration, management, and analysis of basic science research and genomic datasets a definite advantage.

The successful candidate is able to design, develop, test and run analysis tools under supervision of senior faculty, project bioinformaticians, and other investigators.

The successful candidate requires excellent oral and written communication skills; strong critical thinking, problem solving and attentiveness to detail are required.

The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, highly motivated, and have strong communication skills. The individual in this position is part of a group working on the development and use of clinical, genomic, and genetic applications, processes and pipelines and so should be able to work well in a team environment with other with diverse scientific backgrounds.
