Job Description:
A programmer analyst position is now open within the Rat Genome Database in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Medical College of Wisconsin. This challenging position will involve the design and implementation of software for data acquisition, integration, mining and visualization as part of a team of biologists, computer scientists and bioinformaticians. The programmer analyst is expected to make a significant impact within this project. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: 1.Work with biologists and bioinformaticians to gather user requirements and develop use cases pertaining to ongoing and new software projects. 2.Design, code, test, debug, modify, and document applications for use in biological and genomic data analysis. 3.Develop or refine data analysis and integration methodology and pipelines. 4.Design and implement new functionality for software tools based on needs of user community. 5.Perform analysis of large scale datasets. 6. Perform related responsibilities as required. Perform other duties as assigned. Preferred Schedule: 8am-5pm

Position Requirements:
MINIMUM POSITION QUALIFICATIONS Appropriate education and/or experience may be substituted on equivalent basis Education:Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Computer Science or Bioinformatics. Experience: 5 years of progressively more responsible experience. Certifications/Licenses: None KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES: The successful candidate will have experience in software development with demonstrated proficiency with current, relevant programming languages. This includes a solid understanding of web technologies such as HTML, JavaScript, and CSS. Experience in Java, and experience working in a UNIX environment preferred; good relational database experience (e.g. MySQL, Oracle) and experience developing and implementing genomic or biological ontology based tools a definite advantage. Experience with source control, build management, software testing, and cloud based applications a plus. Candidates with a basic understanding of biological systems and familiarity with basic molecular biology, genetics and bioinformatics techniques preferred but candidates with strong programming skills and a limited biological background, but an eagerness to learn are encouraged to apply. Experience in integration, management, and analysis of large scale datasets a definite advantage. The successful candidate should be able to independently design, develop, test and run analysis tools. Preference given to those who have created software tools for diverse user communities. The successful candidate requires excellent oral and written communication skills; strong critical thinking, problem solving and attentiveness to detail are required. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, highly motivated, and have strong communication skills. The individual in this position is part of a group working on the development and use of genomic, genetic and phenotype data applications, processes and pipelines and so should be able to work well in a team environment with other with diverse scientific backgrounds. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Manual Dexterity:Work requires definite skilled and accurate physical operations requiring some closely coordinated performance. Physical Effort:Work requires handling light weight materials or equipment with no special speed or exertion. Working Conditions: Ordinary office, shop, field, or warehouse working conditions with some slightly disagreeable features. Hazards:Negligible. Little or no exposure to hazards.
