Job Description:
Job Description We are looking to recruit a QA Engineer to join the Literature Services Team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI). The Literature Services Team develops and maintains Europe PubMed Central (Europe PMC: http://europepmc.org), a large repository of over 30 million full text biomedical research articles and abstracts. These records are supplemented with links to biological databases, citation networks, and semantic annotation. Europe PMC is funded by 26 funders of biological and biomedical research across Europe, led by the Wellcome Trust. This is a new role which has been created to take our test strategy to the next level and support a rapidly growing, successful digital service. We are looking for an experienced QA Engineer who is keen to advance their career. You will take a lead role in defining quality criteria and developing test suites. The position reports to the Technical Coordinator of Literature Services.   You’ll be working as part of our development team which includes Java and Database developers. You will be specifically responsible for developing and maintaining test suites for the web UI (for desktop and mobile browsers), the SOAP/RESTful Web Services and the backend loading and indexing pipelines. You will also be required to write test cases for manual testing. Our team codes in HTML, JavaScript, CSS and Java. We use the Wicket, Spring and Hibernate frameworks and the Tomcat Servlet container on the front-end and the Web Services. Europe PMC has an Oracle database and we use the Lucene/Solr search technologies. The back-end pipelines are written in Perl and Shell Scripts. We are currently using Selenium and JUnit Tests for developing test suites, JMeter for load testing, Jenkins for Continuous Integration and Git for version control. This is a new role in the team and you will be required to take the lead on defining our QA criteria and strategy, as well as mentoring other members of the team in good testing practices. You’ll have excellent knowledge of test automation and testing methodologies and you will be familiar with automated test frameworks such as Selenium and JUnit Tests and bug tracking tools such as JIRA. Experience with Databases (Oracle, SQLPlus) would be important. Exposure to shell scripting, regular expressions and Perl would also be desirable. You’ll have demonstrable experience of working on data-driven websites with high usage traffic (Europe PMC has 1 million unique visitors per month).   At EMBL-EBI, we help scientists realise the potential of ‘big data’ in biology by enabling them to exploit complex information to make discoveries that benefit mankind. Working for EMBL-EBI gives you an opportunity to apply your skills and energy for the greater good. As part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), we are a non-profit, intergovernmental organisation funded by 21 member states and two associate member states and proud to be an equal-opportunity employer. We are located on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK, and our 600 staff are engineers, technicians, scientists and other professionals from all over the world. Qualifications and Experience You will relish solving problems creatively and effectively. You will demonstrate excellent communication skills, be a pro-active, team player and collaborate effectively with other team members. It would be an advantage if you are familiar with working in an Agile team and using Agile methodologies, including SCRUM and Kanban. Ideally you’ll have a degree in computer science or relevant experience as a QA Engineer or related topic. Experience working in bioinformatics, biological resource development and/or technical experience within scientific publishing or information science would be an advantage. You will have the benefit of working on a fantastic campus with excellent facilities, within an international team. There will be occasional opportunities to travel overseas to conferences. You will be willing to learn new things and develop your skills and knowledge on the job. But you will also benefit from a range of training opportunities and seminars within the organisation. Benefits EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation. The remuneration package comprises a competitive salary, a comprehensive pension scheme and health insurance, educational and other family related benefits where applicable, as well as financial support for relocation and installation. We have an informal culture, international working environment and excellent professional development opportunities but one of the really amazing things about us is the concentration of technical and scientific expertise – something you probably won’t find anywhere else. If you’ve ever visited the campus you’ll have experienced first-hand our friendly, collegial and supportive atmosphere, set in the beautiful Cambridgeshire countryside. Our staff also enjoy excellent sports facilities including a gym, a free shuttle bus, an on-site nursery, cafés and restaurant and a library.
