Job Description:
A part time Research Assistant position is available in the Crustaceans Relationship with Archaea and Bacteria (CRAB) Lab, Department of Biological Sciences, Hampton University, for highly motivated individual with training and background in biological, microbiological, environmental Sciences, and bioinformatics. The CRAB lab focuses on the identification of microbial species in commercial probiotics used in aquaculture and from environmental samples.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Research Assistant will be responsible for assisting in the execution of experiments for identification of microbial species using molecular biology techniques (e.g. PCR, gene cloning, DNA sequencing, next gen sequencing data etc.), and microbial viability testing using PCR approach. Specifically, the Research Assistant will identify microbial composition in various probiotics recruited for the study. The Research Assistant will also participate in regular lab meetings, provide timely updates on progress, maintain lab notebook, prepare publication quality figures and data tables, write reports and present data at scientific meeting/s and follow-up on to ensure the timely completion of the study. There is an expectation of co-authorship.

Requirements:

A master’s degree in biology, environmental sciences, microbiology, and bioinformatics is required. A bachelors’ degree may be considered if the candidate has the appropriate requisite experience to perform the tasks described above.

Qualifications:

The Research Assistant must have excellent knowledge of molecular biology, DNA extraction, PCR amplification, experimental design and ability to execute and trouble shoot. We are looking for an outgoing candidate with a Master’s Degree. However, additional training will be available and provided. The candidate must have the ability to work independently or with minimal supervision.
