Job Description:
We are seeking a bioinformatics or computing scientist to research and develop new approaches to integrating and mining information about drugs and their targets, as part of an exciting new European Union funded project, REPOTRIAL. This is a highly multidisciplinary project involving computing scientists, molecular biologists and clinicians from both academia and industry across Europe.

Your role will be to work closely with the Newcastle and Munich teams to help research and develop novel software systems that will dynamically integrate data. These systems will use a federated approach, to integrate data from a variety of different databases to form a knowledge base that can be used to indicate opportunities for drug repurposing and biomarker development. You will take the lead in the development of an ontology-based data model to support semantic data integration, liaise with clinicians about the data to be integrated, specify the workflows for integration and develop the necessary data mapping rules. You will also liaise with the other scientists on the project to gather requirements for the integrative software system.

You will have a PhD awarded or nearing completion in bioinformatics or computing science. Experience in biological data management and modelling is also essential. Experience with bioinformatics software and workflows is also necessary. Experience in systems biology, drug development, clinical trials are also highly desirable.

You will need a strong bioinformatics background. Skills in handling large biological datasets, biological databases and workflow development are also essential. You will also need strong communication skills to interact effectively with scientists from other disciplines in the project. You will need to be able to travel to different groups in Europe to present your work and collaborate with other groups.

This is an interdisciplinary post that involves research at the interface of computing, molecular biology and medicine.

You will join one of the largest and most successful academic bioinformatics groups in the country based in the School of Computing. We have recently moved to tailor-made facilities in the new Urban Sciences Building, providing an exciting environment for interactive interdisciplinary research.

This post is available fixed term for 30 months.
