An exciting opportunity is available for an energetic and committed researcher to develop a novel automated text analysis system capable of extracting location data and semantically related information from multiple text sources.

The post arises from a collaboration between the UK Hydrographic Office and the Intelligent Systems group in the Department of Engineering Mathematics, University of Bristol.

The researcher will be based at the UK Hydrographic Office in Taunton. The position will involve close co-operation with UKHO researchers, using emerging technologies from text analytics, natural language processing and data science to produce a reliable system which can identify locations within potential source documents, and also to construct a search engine which uses location as a key differentiator between items.

You have (or expect to have soon) a PhD in computer science or a closely related field. You have a broad knowledge of computational intelligence and methods for manipulating and analysing large datasets, as well as excellent programming skills (in java or a similar language). You have excellent written and spoken communication skills and an ability to explain and share novel concepts and techniques with colleagues. You enjoy working in a multidisciplinary team and have a good degree of self-motivation.

In order to satisfy eligibility criteria and a basic security check for the UK Hydrographic Office, candidates should be a UK resident or part of the European Economic Area.

This post is being offered on a full time, fixed term contract for 15 months (or ending 31 March 2017).

Informal enquires can be made to: Professor Trevor Martin (trevor.martin@bristol.ac.uk)

Interviews are expected to be held in late April/Early May 2016.
